TOMAHAWK BOATING CLUB
WEEK-END RACING A series of mishaps marred the Tomahawk Boating Club’s race for yachts 12ft 6in and under sailed during the week-end. Valencia (D. Hewitt) and Rona (A. Biggs) were first away, followed 10 minutes later by Bunyip (J. Mack). On the beat to the top buoy Valencia led by a considerable distance *from Rona, with Bunyip third, but at the top buoy a sudden squall caught Valencia on the gybe and she capsized. This same squall swamped Rona and broke Bunyip’s mast. After spending an uncomfortable 15 minutes in the water the crews of the overturned boats were picked up by Messrs J. Thompson and A. Reeves. The race was discontinued.
In the model yacht races there were some very close finishes, in most cases only seconds separating the placed boats. This class of racing has reached a high standard at Tomahawk as the rules state that every race must be sailed on a windward course.
The following are the results of the model yacht races:— Three Foot Six Inches and Under. —Val (C. Hewitt), Jmin, 1; Wines (A Reeves), Imin, 2; Matua (J. Thompson), scr, 3, Davies Cup Handicap. (Four-foot and Under). —Vagabond (D. Hewitt), scr. 1: Val (C. Hewitt), 2min. 2; Vanja (J. Thompson), Imin, 3. Four-foot and Under.—Wings (A. Reeves), Imin, 1; Vanja (J. Thompson), Imin. 2; Raeona (A. Biggs), scr., 3.
