CROQUET

By Clips

Club captains and secretaries are invited to send in items of interest, for inclusion in this column. Questions relating to laws of the game will be answered as far as possible. Correspondence must bear the writer’s name and address, as well as nom de plume and must reach this office not later than Tuesday in each week. COMING TOURNAMENTS Christmas. —Canterbury Croquet Association tournament. January 5. —Otago senior tournament, Dunedin. January 6. —South Island championships, Dunedin. STRIKING HOOP WITH MALLET Very often when a ball is near a hoop a stroke cannot be taken without the back of the mallet hitting the hoop. This must not be confused with a foul stroke, as there is no penalty attached to this stroke, and it does not come under the heading of “ foul strokes.” It very often impedes the free action of the swing of the mallet, but is quite a clean stroke, provided, through the extremely short back swing, the ball is not hit twice in succession, in which latter case it would, of course, be a foul stroke, and the turn must cease, the opponent having the option of having the ball replaced. . In the event of a player failing to move the ball off which croquet is taken, the opponent may, if so desired, have the ball replaced. This privilege is not as widely used as it could be, and early in the season a reminder may be of interest. CORRESPONDENCE "Wired” asks: “As a result of a bit of confusion arising in a recent match ■on our lawns, would you please explain these two points with regard to wired balls? ~ , _ . 1. Playing blue and black, I have wired these two and also yellow from red, but blue and black are both open to yellow. Is this sufficient, or must both red and yellow have an open shot? . , 2. Playing as above I have wired blue and black from red and yellow, but these two are open to each other. Is this all right, or must I leave one of my balls open tO: red and yellow? REPLY 1. At the conclusion of your turn (as shown above) both the opponents balls must have a clear shot at at least one other ball. 2. It is not necessary to leave one of your balls open to the opponent if her own two are open to each other. Your only necessary precaution is, before completing your turn, to see that both the opponent’s balls have a clear shot at one other ball. The penalty for leaving a ball without a shot is that your opponent may take that ball to baulk: and another point to remember is that your opponent need not take that ball to baulk in her next turn, but may do so in any subsequent turn, provided it still has not an open shot.
