KENNEL CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the North, Otago Kennel Club. Mr M. F. Woodward occupied the chair. There was a fair attendance of members present. The chairman spoke on the steady satisfactory progress of the club, and stated that it was gratifying to note that the balance sheet disclosed a slight improvement over the last year’s workings. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr D. H. Reid; vice-patrons—Drs R. S. Orbell and Fitzgerald, Messrs J. Fraser, J. Meikle, G. Elvidge, K. Austin, R. Finch, J. Grant, A. Foster, H. S. Orbell, J. B. Grave, and J. R. Sewell; president, Dr Smith Morton; vice-presi-dents, Messrs S. Spears and M. F. Woodward; veterinary surgeon, Mr G. C. Hayhurst: auditor, Mr R. Finch; treasurer, Mr W. Kinder; secretary, Mr A. D. Gibson; show manager, Mr S. Browne. Eleven nominations were received for the seven positions on the committee, the following being elected: —Messrs Vernor, Hayhurst, Wylie, Forrester, Petrie, A. Easton, and Cubitt. Dr Smith Morton returned thanks for his election to the position of president, and congratulated the retiring president on the able manner in which he had conducted his duties during his term of office. He trusted that the committee would rally round him, and give the same valuable assistance as it had in the past. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring committee, donors of prizes, and the press. COMMITTEE MEETING At a subsequent meeting of the new committee the following sub-commit-tees were set up:—Office Committee— Messrs Kinder and Hayhurst; Benching Committee —Messrs S. Browne (convener), Forester, Petrie, Vernor, Coker, and Glynn; Specials Committee—Dr Smith Morton (convener). Messrs S. Spears, M. F. Woodward. Hayhurst, Wylie, Kinder, Easton, and Cubitt: Entertainment Committee —Dr Smith Morton (convener), Messrs Brown, Spears, Wylie, and Cubitt; Schedule Committee —Dr Smith Morton, Messrs Hayhurst, and Woodward; Advertising Committee, Messrs W.Kinder and A. D. Gibson; Emergency Committee—Dr Smith Morton, Messrs Spears, and Woodward, The president suggested that a deputation from the club should wait on the Borough Council in regard to the nuisance created by wandering dogs, and the matter was left until next meeting. Dr Smith Morton also suggested that public interest should be enlivened in connection with hydatids in animals, and he promised to give a lecture at the next meeting of the club. Various matters affecting the welfare of the club were then discussed, and it is fully expected that the year’s operations will prove as successful as those held in the past, WAIAREKA LODGE ANNUAL REUNION The annual reunion of the Waiareka Lodge, No. 51, 1.0.0. F., held m the Enfield Hall, took the form of a social and dance this year. There was a. large attendance of Oddfellows and friends, including visitors from the Loyal Alfred. Hope of Maheno, Star of Papakaio, Pioneer (Invercargill), Tengapai (South Canterbury), Unity (Dunedin), Pearl of Mataura, and Rose of Oamaru Rebekah Lodges. The Waiareka Lodge was also honoured by a visit from Bro.. R. E. Sligo, grand secretary of the Lodge of New Zealand. He was accompanied by Bro. E. N. Sudden, past degree master of the South Otago District Lodge. As this was the grand secretary’s first visit to the lodge,' he was given a warm welcome. Dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Mr G. Pringle, Bro. D. Elliott carrying out the duties of M.C. During the evening songs were rendered by Mrs C. Hay, Sis. M. Sherwin and Bros. A. Anderson and r. Martin, while the accompaniments were played by Miss E. Paton and Sis. Sherwin. The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of Sisters Bradley, Yuill, and Anderson. Very interesting addresses were given by Bro. A. Wilson and Bro, R. E. Sligo, grand warden and grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. Bro. William Neill, D.D.G.M, joined with the noble grand in extending a welcome to Bro. Sligo to the district, and Bro. E. G. Sudden, P.D.M., and Sis. L. Anderson, N.G. (Rose of Oamaru), also spoke. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING Prior to the reunion function, the usual fortnightly meeting of the lodge was held. The noble grand spoke of the loss suffered by the Order througn the death of Bro. D. M. Miller, a past grand master and senior grand trustee of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand, who had taken a prominent part in the work of the Order over a very long period of years. The sick members were reported to be progressing favourably. The annual report and balance sheet of tl;e United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary were received, and the members expressed gratiflcatioh at the year’s progress. BIBLE CLASS BANQUET Roses and poppies gave St. Paul’s Hall quite a festive air on Saturday night, the occasion being the annual Bible class banquet, there being about 90 Bible class members and friends present.

The following toast list was honoured: “The King"; “The Church ” (Mr J. C. Kirkness—the Rev. J, M. McKenzie): “Bible Class Past and Present” (Mr R. W. Hill—Messrs A. R. Tait and S. Miller); “Our Visitors ” (Miss B. Austin—Mrs W. Kinder).

During the evening the following items were much appreciated:—Vocal duet, Miss B. Kirkness and Mr D McLeod: recitation, Miss G. Judkins; vocal solo, Miss O. Rankin; quartet, Misses M. Barclay, B. Austin, E. Calder, and O, Rankin; mixed quartet. Misses B. Kirkness and G. Dixon and Messrs D. McLeod and A. Gunn._ Accompaniments were played by Miss D. King. At the conclusion of the programme Miss R. Hill thanked the performers and the Rev. J. M. McKenzie closed with Vespers. OAMARU MAGISTRATE’S COURT The weekly sitting of the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court was resumed yesterday morning before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. Judgment by default was given for plaintiff in the following civil case;— G T. Gillies v. F, Dumerquc, costs only (£1 8s). CLAIM FOR POSSESSION Eliza Jane Wix (Mr C. Stevens), as a second mortgagee, proceeded against John McCone on a claim for possession of a house property at Awamoa, the action being taken owing to a default in interest. William McCombio staled that defendant had applied for relief under the Mortgagors Rehabilitation Act, and ho had agreed to pay £ls on April 20 and thereafter £1 7s 6d per week. He paid £ll 10s in October, and no further payments were made. The claimant did not receive any interest this year. Mr Bundle made an order for possession on or before December 20, costs being allowed at £1 14s 6d. FAR EAST RELIEF APPEAL
