METHODIST VIEW OF DRINKING

"Industrial firms have had to limit their work, but the licensed trade is allowed to pursue its way without limitation. If it is right to apply the 40-hour week to other trades it should be applied to the liquor trade," said the Rev. H. Ryan at the North Canterbury Methodist Synod meeting in Christchurch. He said that a great deal of the increased wages was going into the hotels. Mr W. C. Francis said that shops observed a 44-hour week and if the limitation on the hotel hours were urged it should be for a 44hour and not a 40-hour week. Other speakers on the subject of the consumption of alcohol included the Rev. Moses Ayrton, who advocated that all motor-car drivers should be total abstainers. A resolution condemning the increased consumption of alcoholic liquors called on the Minister of Justice and the Police Department to secure stricter enforcement of the law providing for 6 o'clock closing, and stated that the only solution of the problem was the total abolition of the liquor traffic.
