BURDEN OF TAXATION
POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND COMPANY CHAIRMAN’S OPINION LONDON, Nov. 18. (Received Nov. 19, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Edmund Parker, at Dalgety’s annual meeting, said: “With a further period of settled government ahead, and given good seasons, there is no reason why the present prosperous times should not be maintained. It is true that the price of wool has fallen sharply and the market is unstable, but to-day’s prices are still remunerative. Taxation in New Zealand and Australia is a very heavy burden, and there is little prospect of relief. In fact, New Zealand bids fair to become one of the most heavily taxed countries in the world.” Mr Edmund Parker was with the firm of Dalgety and Co. in Dunedin for 17 years, and later superintended their New Zealand branches. He is now chairman of Dalgety and Co. and chairman of the Union Bank of Australia.
