WATERSIDE LABOUR

POOR STANDARD OF WORK SHIPPING MANAGER’S VIEWS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. Criticism of the standard of work of New Zealand v/aterside workers was made by Mr C. M. Turrell, general manager and director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, who returned to the Dominion by the Awatea after a business and holiday visit to England. . . Mr Turrell said the cqsts against shipowners had gone up in an extraordinary manner, and as far as the New Zealand trade was concerned practically no ships were being built other than those which had been ordered prior to these rises. The building programmes of various companies had been delayed. One of the worst features of the situation for owners in the New Zealand trade was the poor work which was given by waterside labourers in the Dominion, Mr Turrell added. “The New Zealand waterside, worker can do just as good work as anybody and he used to do so,” he said. The position, however, had changed. The standard of work was poor and was not what companies were entitled to, especially with the wages they were paying. In Australia, England, and elsewhere much better work was done by the same class of men.
