AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SATURDAY’S CHAMPIONSHIPS For the first time in the history of amateur athletics in Otago a women s and junior track and field championships’ meeting is to be held. This important fixture will be staged at the Caledonian Ground to-morrow afternoon, commencing at 2.15 Large entries have been received, particularly from women's clubs, and competition should be keen and interesting Two outstanding visitors will be Miss Betty Forbes (Oamaru), the national high jump record holder, and Miss Dons Strachan (South Canterbury), holder of the national long jump title. There will also be many excellent sprinters taking part, with 10 teams in the Women’s Relay Race. The junior championships should also provide the public with bright racing, particularly ir the meeting if C. McGregor and A j R. Duff in the sprints, and of D. Foord and J A McPherson in the longer dis tances. Empire Games trials will also be held in which the national half-mile champion, T. Allen, and H. J. Tyrie will appear. These races should also attract considerable attention.
