A FORGED LETTER
MAN POSES AS HORSE TRAINER REMANDED FOR SENTENCE (Peh United Press Association) . AUCKLAND, Nov. 18. For attempting to obtain from Jermyn John Hudson, master of the steamer Port Hunter, £lO by falsely representing that he was a horse trainer named D. Gray, David Daniel Gray, aged 38, engineer, was convicted in the Police Court and remanded for sentence. Hudson said that Giray presented a letter purporting to be from Captain Steele, of the steamer Port Brisbane, stating that Gray had put him on to a winning horse and would do the same for him. Gray told witness that if he gave him £lO he would put him on a sure thing to win £ 150 on Saturday next. Witness found the signature did not tally with that of Captain Steele. In a statement from the dock Gray said he had put Steele and others on to winners. Surely there was nothing wrong with that. The Magistrate: No, but when you make out that a letter comes from another captain that is getting into another man’s confidence. You will be convicted on this charge. The police said that nothing was known about Gray. He was remanded for seven days for sentence.
