A SERIOUS CHARGE

MAN BRUTALLY ASSAULTED INJURED BY BLOW ON HEAD (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ Nov. 17. In the Magistrate’s Court, Harold Colin Drager, aged 21, a labourer, of Woodville, who was yesterday remanded till November 23 on a charge of wounding Arthur Harris with intent to do grievous bodily harm, made application for bail. Detective Sergeant Meiklejohn stated this was a case of a brutal and premeditated assault, which occurred at 8 o’clock on Monday night. The accused had told his parents he was going to bed, but slipped out, called at the back door of Harris s and asked for a packet of cigarettes. When Harris was stooping to open his cashbox he was stunned by a blow. He rushed blindly at the man, Harris receiving a further blow on the head. Harris managed to gain possession of a hammer allegedly used, and reached the door and called for help. “This man is very fortunate that a more serious charge has not been brought, for if the hammer had struck a vital spot this quite possibly would have been so,” said Detective Sergeant Meiklejohn. Counsel suggested that the accused had suffered from an attack of sunstroke. Bail was allowed, self in £2OO and two sureties of £IOO each, the accused to report to the police daily.
