.An unenviable experience befell Mr John Andrew Butler, aged 90, when he attempted to walk across the Taruheru River in the vicinity of Atkinson street, Gisborne, and his legs became securely wedged in the mud. His plight was first noticed by a boy at about 3 p.m., but the lad did not take particular notice of the incident, and did not mention the fact to his father until at tea The father proceeded immediately to the point indicated by his son, and found the old man in the last stages of exhaustion. Mr Butler was attended by a doctor and ordered to the Cook Hospital, where he is still under observation. Advertising pays its way often many times over.
