WANAKA A. and P. Association A committee meeting of the Upper Clutha A. and P. Association was held at Luggate, when various sub-com-mittees to amend the schedules were appointed. Miss K. M. Wilson was appointed secretary and Mr C. J. Collings, who has acted as temporary secretary, was thanked for past services. The Weather Some idea of the dry weather being experienced in this district can be gauged from the fact that the rainfall for the past three months was 2.75 inches, compared with 10.87 inches for the same period last year. Police Appointments Constable W. Symons, who has been appointed to take charge of the Pembroke Police Station, arrived from Gore on Tuesday last. Constable A. D, Pearce, who has been relieving at Pembroke, returned to Arrowtown on Wednesday. Cricket A Wanaka cricket team travelled to Luggate on Saturday and defeated the home team. Luggate declared with six wickets down for 220 runs. Wanaka scored 249 for seven wickets. The top scorers for Luggate were R. Reid (131 not out), P, Hunt (19), J. Bovett (15), R. Todd (10), and D. Lawn Tenpis Fine weather prevailed for the continuation of the Eastern Southland lawn tennis interclub competitions on Saturday. The following were the results:—A Grade: At the Gore Club's courts the previously unbeaten Wyndham team went under to Gore by 10 sets (106 games) to 6 sets (97 games). Playing at the St. Andrew's courts the home team was defeated by Mataura by 11 sets (102 games) to 5 sets (92 games). Citizens had no difficulty in defeating the Wyndham No. 2 team by 15 sets (120 games) to 1 set (50 games). B Grade: An easy win was recorded for Gore No. 1 against Mataura by 13 sets (110 games) to 3 sets (60 games). Playing at the St. Patrick's courts the home team defeated Wyndham by 10 sets GOO games) to 3 sets (86 games). Edendale played St. Andrew's at Edendale, and was successful in winning by 12 sets (108 games) to 3 sets (60 games). After some closely-fought matches, Anglican No. 2 beat Gore No. 1 by 9 sets (107 games) to 7 sets (87 games).

Obituary After a brief illness the death occurred at Gore of Mrs George Low at the age of 78 years. Mrs Low had been a resident of Gore for the last 54 years and was well known in the town. Born at Gippsland (Victoria. Australia), she was a daughter of Mr and Mrs T. G. Smith, and with her family she came to New Zealand 70 years ago Mr and Mrs Smith settled at Tapanui and in 1881 deceased married Mr George Low. Two years later they moved to Gore, where Mrs Low resided until the time of her death. She was predeceased by her husband 19 years ago and she is survived by a family of five sons—Messrs Thomas (Christchurch), Peter (Timaru), John (Dunedin), Douglas (Gore) and R. I. Low (Wellington)—and four daughters—Mesdames J. Sheehy (Eltham), L. Gee (Riversdale), J. Ibbotson (Riversdale) and R. Dickson (Riverton). The funeral took place to the Gore cemetery on Sunday. Advice was received at Gore on Saturday of the death at Christchurch of Mr John H. V. Leishman, formerly of Gore. He came to Gore some 30 years ago, being employed as an engine driver for the New Zealand Railways Department. Sixteen years ago he was transferred to Christchurch and he retired from the service four years later. He is survived by a widow, one son and three daughters. Returned Soldier Honoured

The high esteem in which Mr W. D. Shelton is held by the members of the Gore Returned Soldiers' Association was demonstrated at the annual reunion and twenty-first birthday of the association on Saturday evening, when he was presented with a grandfather clock in recognition of his valuable services given to the association since its inception. The function was held in the club rooms, and was attended by over 300 ex-servicemen from all parts of Otago and Southland. Making the presentation the president (Mr S. B. Paterson) said that the guest of honour had been a foundation member of the association, and had been president on two occasions. He had also been district vice-president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association for a term. He had acted as honorary treasurer since the inception of the association, and no member had done as much in the interests of returned soldiers. Mr Paterson then presented the grandfather clock, the inscription on which read: "Presented by the Gore Returned Soldiers' Association to Mr W. D. Shelton in recognition of his 21 years' service as honorary treasurer of the Gore Returned Soldiers' Association." Mr Paterson also handed a gold wristlet watch to Mr Shelton as a presentation to Mrs Shelton from the Gore Returned Soldiers Association. Later in the evening Mr H. Ritchie, of Invercargill, presented Mr Shelton with a certificate of merit on behalf of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association. He stated that it was only the second to be presented in the Dominion, and he felt sure Mr Shelton deserved the honour. In reply Mr Shelton said that it was the proudest moment of his life, and he deeply appreciated the kind things said about him. During the evening Mr J M. Boyne presented the Colours of the 3rd infantry Battalion, Otago Regiment, to the president (Mr Paterson) for safe keeping by the Gore Returned Soldiers' Association. CLYDE Cricket At Clyde on Saturday afternoon, Excelsior A (Alexandra) defeated the local team in a one-innings game by 78 runs to 36. Clyde batted first, but only Rankin (12) and R. Croquet Mrs E. C. Wood has been made the recipient of a fireside companion as a token of appreciation of her valued assistance to the local Croquet Club for which she has acted as secretary for a number of years. On Wednesday a Bridgman Vase match was played against Alexandra, the local players being in good form to win all their games. The following were the scores (Clyde names first) : Doubles.—Mesdames E. Singles.—Mrs George 26, Mrs Rivers 12- Mrs Davis 26, Mrs Williams 18; Mrs Wood 26, Mrs McGrath 23; Mrs Aitken 26, Mrs Norton 12. CROMWELL Returned Soldiers' Association Mr O. L. Ferens, secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, paid his annual visit to Cromwell last Friday. Mr Ferens addressed a large gathering of returned men in the evening, when matters closely connected with the welfare of the association were discussed. The soldier-farmer, pensions. Poppy Day, Flock House, and unemployment were all dealt with by Mr Ferens, who also explained the arrangements made to date in connection with the forthcoming visit of returned men to Sydney. The Weather The weather during the past week continued dry and unchanged, with hot, summer days. At the week-end exceptionally warm conditions prevailed until Sunday afternoon, when a sultry change to an overcast sky was followed by a slight shower. This was only of short duration, unfortunately, and the district generally is suffering acutely from the lack of rainfall. Cricket In the Cricket Association fixtures on Saturday Cromwell A was defeated

by Lowburn by 210 to 27. For Lowburn, M. Partridge was the most successful batsman and bowler, putting up a fine score of 80 and taking nine wickets for 14 runs. For Cromwell, S. Middleton took six wickets for nine runs. Cromwell B defeated Excelsior B (Alexandra) by 123 to 119. Lawn Tennis On Saturday the Cromwell Lawn Tennis Club's team visited the Hawea Flat Club, and won by 14 sets to 2. The following are the results (Hawea names first):— Men's Singles.—T. Allison 0, D.
