THE Otago Daily Times. “ Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, NOV. 16, 1866.
SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO
The short, sharp decisive war that drove Austria from its connection with Germany indicates the change that a century has wrought in the policy of European States, and in the relationship of monarchs to their people. The French profess to see in the conduct of England a loss of that influence that once had so marked an effect upon Continental politics. With that tendency to draw hasty conclusions from mere appearances, so characteristic of the people, the sacrifices that England has made for other nations, whether from mistaken motives or not matters nothing to the argument, are altogether ignored. It has been the fashion for half a century to attribute all the political movements of England to interested motives. The enormous debt incurred during the war waged for so many years to preserve the independence of Europe appears to be altogether misinterpreted. Perhaps, considering that it was against France herself, a more liberal construction could not be expected. Yet it would not be difficult to show that throughout the long Napoleonic wars England was actuated by a true spirit of chivalry, and that so far from reaping those material advantages that have been so constantly paraded before the world as the incentives to her determined perseverance, her conquests _ involved immediate serious self-sacrifice. .
Mr Vogel stated in the Provincial Council yesterday that he had informed the Superinteiident that he had communicated with Messrs 4T. D. Bell, H. D. Maddock, and J. Mouat as to the formation of a Government; and that those gentlemen, separately agreeing that union as to policy was possible, had consented to join a Government formed by him, if, after discussion, they found that they could agree upon details. Mr Vogel thereupon asked for an adjournment until Tuesday next; and this was agreed to, an amendment by Mr Thomson for allowing until Tuesday week being negatived by 19 to 5. Mr Allen, in the Cutting, has produced the first strawberries of the season. We have been shown a sample of them, which were a fine sort and perfectly ripe. The committee of the Drapers’ Early Closing Association, by advertisement, thank the public for supporting their endeavors, and request a continuance of it in order that the closing hour on Saturdays may be 8 o’clock, (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.! NELSON, Thursday. The “ Southern Cross ” of the 12th irist. reports threatened disturbances at Tauranga.
