Mrs Stewart presiding. The roll call was, “ What our grandparents did without.” The competition was, “ Four sausage rolls.” Mrs McKechie being the winner. Mrs Taylor gave a report on the Middlemarch meeting. The hostesses wore Mcsdames Tyrrell and Wicks. * * At the November meeting of the St Andrews Institute Mrs Mills presided ‘‘Edward the First” was the subject for the golden thread talk, which was given by Mrs Mills. Miss D. Bell read correspondence bearing on the domestic training scheme instituted by Mi T. D. Burnett, M.P. It was resolved that Mrs Bannerman attend the next meeting on the subject and report that St. Andrews was considering what help it could give. A link letter from the St; Andrews Institute (Scotland) evoked much interest among the mom bers. The Drama Circle had prepared a charade under the direction of Mrs Bannerman. Mrs Johnston and Misses M. Russell and C. Bell were the winners of competitions. * * * The W’aikouaiti Instiute met on Wednesday last. The vice-president (Mrs Simmons) occupied the chair. The roll call was, “ Scotch Story.” The moot was, “ O wad some power the giftie gie us tae see oursel’s as ithers see us: ’twad frae many a blunder free us. and foolish notion.” The competition. “Oatcakes.” resulted in Mrs Toomey being first, Mrs F. Aitcheson and Miss Maxwell (equal) second The competition, “ Shortbread.” resulted in Mrs C. Aitcheson being first and Mrs Toomey second. In the competition. “ Something made from flour bags,” Mrs Toomey was first and Mrs F. Aitcheson second. Mrs Baxter delegate -to the Middlemarch conference, gave an interesting report. A loan packet from the A.C.E. on interior decoration was studied. Hostesses were Mesdames Carling and Stecdman and Miss Maxwell. * * * When the Warepa Institute met Miss Heckler presided. The motto was, “All roads that lead to God are good. ’ Miss Cross, delegate to the half-yearly federation meeting at Owaka, gave a descriptive and detailed report of the proceedings. Miss Heckler welcomed members of the Balclutha branch of the League of Mothers, introducing Mrs Willocks who gave an interesting talk on “ Samoa.” and Mrs Grigor who gave a humorous Scotch reading. The roll call was. “ Something interesting in bird or animal life.” The competition points for the day were:—Print frock: Senior. Miss Brownlie 1, Miss Shanks 2 (two entries, equal), and Miss E M. Ayson 4. Junior: Miss A Cross 1, Miss M. Christie 2. Lady’s spray and man’s buttonhole: Senior. Miss S. M. Ayson 1, Miss Brownlie 2. Mrs Bringans, Misses Heckler and Shanks (equal) 3. Junior: Miss M. Burnley 1.

Mesdames Shanks and Stewart and Miss Shanks were, hostesses. * * ♦ The Awamoa-Alma Institute met in the Totara Hall. Miss Ross presided. The motto was “Put all your troubles to the bottom of your heart and sit on the lid and smile.” The hostesses were Mesdames Perry, O’Brien, Parker, and Nicolls. Miss Ross gave a report of the Dominion Federation, The competition was “ The most useful apron.” The winners were Misses Martin and Keating first (equal), and Mrs Barr third. # ♦ # Waianakarua Institute met on Saturday. In the absence of the president and vice-president, Miss Pattla presided. The motto was “To mourn a mischief that is gone, is the best way to draw new mischief on,” and the roll call “A limerick on one of our members.” The competitions resulted as follows:—Three girdle scones, Mrs N, Ross first, Mrs J. Hutton second; three stalks of rhubarb, Mrs N. • Ross first, Miss D. Rawcliffe second. Miss Pattle conducted the social half-hour, two amusing competitions being enjoyed. Mrs J. Hutton was hostess. The members of the institute had previously bidden farewell to a popular member, Mrs R. Willberg at an afternoon party, when opportunity was taken of making a presentation to her. * * i|t The Taumata Institute met on November 13, Miss C. Hamilton presiding. The motto was “ If you would have a friend be one.” and the roll call "My favourite hobby.” In the competition few best-arranged bowl of flowers Miss M. McArthur was first, with Miss C. Hamilton second. An interesting demonstration on “ Hairpin work ” was given by Mrs R. Lawrence. Miss E. Carruthers was hostess. « ¥ ¥ * Mrs A. E. Brown presided* at the meeting of the Naseby Institute, and gave her account as delegate of the conference meeting at Middlemarch. Mrs J. Graham and Mrs B. Jacob also gave talks on their impressions of the conference as visitors. Dr Costello spoke in a wide and general sense on “ Dietetics.” The competition, “ Crystalised flowers,” was won by Mrs Fowler, and the roll call, “A piece of needlework,” was well responded to, and a creditable display shown. Hostesses were Mrs M. Hore and Mrs A. E. Brown.
