TIMBER FOR MILLING
PORT CHALMERS PLANTATIONS TENDERS CALLED FOR PURCHASE At the last meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council the proposal was put forward that the timber in the council's plantations around the reservoir at Sawyers' Bay, now ready for milling, should be sold, and the proposal has now been carried a step further, tenders having been called for the purchase of this timber. When the scheme was first brought torward by Cr Watson, a lengthy discussion was taken in committee, as a result of which it was decided that the whole council should visit the reserves to inspect the timber for themselves. This inspection was carried out at the week-end when it was decided that, if a reasonable price could be obtained, Cr Watson's scheme should be carried into effect. The proposal was that about 15.000 trees should be disposed for milling purposes and firewood. Cr Watson dealt at length with the condition of the plantations, describing the types and species of trees growing there, ind emphasised the fact that the council had at its command a handsome asset which was now ready to be realised. At the time some doubt was expressed regarding the feasibility of the scheme, but its proposer assured the council that he could convince every member of its practicability. The majority of the trees available for milling are pines, several other varieties being available for firewood.
