SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA School Committee Mr H. Holgate, chairman, presided at the monthly meeting of the Balclutha School Committee on Wednesday night. Notice was received from the Otago Education Board that owing to the increased attendance at the school, it would be raised to Grade 6A, as from February 1, 1938, and that Mr A. Hall would be retained as headmaster; also that Mr A. D. Coates (Gummies Bush, Southland) would take up his duties as assistant from February 1. The report of the headmaster (Mr A. Hall) stated that the roll number was now 395, and the attendance for the month satisfactory. Dr Stevenson (the board's medical officer) had examined a number of children, and recommended that they should attend the next health camp. The Education Board wrote offering to replace the present dual desks with tables ana chairs, provided the committee would defray one-third of the cost.—lt was decided not to accept the offer as the money could be better spent in other directions. It was decided to make a grant towards the cost of cricket material for the boys. Preliminary arrangements were made for a concert to be held at the close of the school year. Regret was expressed at the headmaster's report that the second assistant, Mr Eric Paterson, was still absent on sick leave. BALCLUTHA Caledonian Society At the annual meeting of the Port Molyneux Caledonian Society the annual report stated that owing to the postponement of the sports last New Year, on account of the infantile paralysis epidemic, the society had suffered a loss. It had commenced the year with a credit balance of £194 lis and closed it with the credit reduced to £l6B 7s 7d—a difference of £26 9s sd. It was decided to re-elect last year's officials and to carry out the same programme of sports, with the addition of an event for maiden pipers. The Kaka Point Welfare Society was granted a free site for a side-show. Arrangements would be made at a future meeting, it was announced, to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the society. Owaka A. and P. Society At the annual meeting of the society, which was well attended, it was decided to hold the show on Saturday, December 11. It was decided not to hold a rodeo owing to the danger to spectators and competitors alike. Considering that the society had last year to contend with the paralysis epidemic, the small balance to credit of £2 was considered very satisfactory. Mr Herbert Taylor was elected president of the society, Mr R. B. Warnock vice-president, Mr F. Norrish secretary, and Mr H. C. Alloo auditor.
