OTAGO GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL

REUNION OF EX-PUPILS IN AUCKLAND An enjoyable function took place in Auckland on Saturday evening last, when ex-pupils of the Otago Girls' High School now resident in Auckland gathered in the Overseas Club rooms for a social evening. Miss H. Alexander, a former vice-principal of the school, presided and gave an interesting account of ex-pupils of the school holding distinguished positions in New Zealand and elsewhere. An excellent musical programme was provided by Mrs R. N. W. Reed, Mrs Ramsay Howie, and Mr: B. Beamish. Miss A. Loudon related several incidents in connection with her visits to various schools during her recent trip abroad, and Dr Gladys Rowley gave a report of a meeting of the Otago Ex-girls* High School Association she had attended earlier in the year. Also present were Mrs Mac Neil, Miss E. Roach, Mrs A. Murray, Mrs A. J. Campbell. Mrs A. G. Whitney, Mrs H. D. Guthrie, Mrs E. D. Patterson, Mrs S. T. Carter, Mrs F. H. Broadbent, Mrs Sherwood, Mrs A. R. Elder, Mrs H. B. Walton. Mrs J. Thompson, Mrs L. Davies Mrs J. A. Redwood, Mrs T. Bailey. Mrs W. A. Moor, Miss Mona Maedougall, Miss M. Cowan, Miss M. Williams. Miss Reed, and Miss Lena Hendra. Miss Alexander was presented with a bouquet by the ex-pupils.

The motto was, "If you cannot get what you like, like what you get." The roll call was, "Household task I dislike most." Miss B. Bell, from Dunback, gave an interesting demonstration on " Lamp Slides." The competition, "A best-dressed doll," resulted as follows:—Mrs Souquet 1, Miss L. Olsen 2. and Mrs Tubman 3. The hostesses were Misses L. Olsen and F. Barrett. * * * The Sawyers' Bay Institute met in the hall on Thursday last. The motto was, "Never say I cannot; always say I'll try." The roll call was, "A Scottish verse or song." Competition winners were:-—" Scotch shortbread " Mrs Paterson 1, Mrs Jenkins 2; " Oat cakes," Mrs Jenkins 1, Mrs Lynn 2, Dr Edgar gave an address on "How to Render First Aid to Persons Suffering from Poisoning" and also a demonstration on artificial respiration. A community sing occupied the social half-hour. Hostesses were Mesdames Latta and Jenkins. * * * At the meeting of the Brighton Institute, held in the Hislop Hall on Thursday last, Mrs Wilson presided. The roll call was a golden thread talk given by Mrs George McLeod on " Fay Inchfawn's Poems." The motto was, " Your heart can carry a kindly word; your lips can carry a song." Mrs Milsom, who was delegate at the Middlemarch half-yearly conference, read a report on the meeting. The Rev. Hugh Graham addressed the meeting on Scottish literature. The competition, "A traycloth," was won by Mrs George McLeod. The hostesses were Mesdames McLauchlan and Miller and Misses Mcintosh and Miller.

WOMEN'S DIVISION N.Z FARMERS' UNION Reports ol meetings of branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. To commemorate the seventh year of its activities, the Maniototo branch entertained over 80 guests at an afternoon birthday party held in the Ranfurly Hall on Wednesday last. Mrs C. Donald, president, welcomed visitors and members from Kyeburn, Waipiata, Naseby, and Omakau. Competitions were won by Mrs D. Weir, Mrs Brown, and Mrs Curtis. The competition—- " Vase of spring flowers for effect" — resulted in Mrs B. Cameron being awarded first prize, Mrs Templeton and Mrs Smith second (equal), and Mrs Devenney third. A mixed programme of musical items was carried out, and those contributing were Mrs Kirby and Mrs G. Mathias, who sang a duet with Miss C. Mathias as pianist; Miss N. Herlihy, pianoforte solo; and Miss M. Beattie, Mrs R. Duncan, and Miss B. Herlihy vocal solos. The birthday cake, which was made and decorated by Mrs C. Donald, had its seven candles lighted by Mrs Charles, of Omakau, and extinguished by Mrs Kirby, of Waipiata, and was cut by Mrs Todd, of Kyeburn.
