The inadvisability of having peat in road formations was stressed by Mr F. M. Hansen, of the Public Works Department, Wellington, at the annual conference of the Wellington North branch of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers held in Palmerston North recently. He instanced the Paraparaumu-Paekakariki road which, he claimed, had never been a road suitable to motor traffic, owing to the peat in its formation. He thought they should fall in line with other countries and do away with the peat. In America no roads were built on peat, while in Germany the same was the case. Recently, in Germany a road had been built by hand excavation to a depth of 30ft for a length of W miles.
