HER RECORD-BREAKING FLIGHT "A Wonderful performance" (FRO 34 Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct. 28. A jaotable tribute to the achievement of Miss Jean Batten, the New Zealand flyer, in breaking the record for a solo flight from Australia to England, was paid bv the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) in the House of Representatives to-day when opening the second reading debate on tlie Air Force Bill. "Mies Batten's flight was a wonderful performance and shows the marvellous courage she has, her powers of endurance, and her great skill ais a navigator," Mr Jones said. "I am sure that everyone m New Zealand is proud of the name she has made for herself in aviation, and I am sure that everyone will agree With me in expressing the hope that she will live long and enjoy many 'happy landings." - ttcxn The achievements of Miss Batten were afco referred to by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr A. Hamilton). "She. has brought honour our country and contributed something of value to aviation generally, Mr Hamilton said. "I also think a word of pnfise is due to the Canterbury farmer, Ernie Clarke, who flew from England to Australia and then over the Tasman to his shearing. New Zealand is certainly not behind in aviaticin, and we are proud of these citizens who have brought honour to the* country. The services of Miss Elatten to aviation are f worthy of Government recognition.
