RUNNING-IN NEW TYRES

An interesting and important fact in relation to obtaining longer life from replacement motor tyres, and particularly those fitted to heavyduty commercial vehicles, is disclosed by the Dunlop Perdriau Rubber Company As the result of practical tests under service conditions, it has been proved that motor truck tyres that are to be subjected to heavy work have a longer life if they are first run in on the (front wheels of vehicles instead of being put straight away to hard work on the driving wheels.

To a degree, tyres can be run in to working conditions just as can a new car or truck engine. The reason is that the internal heat developed in a new tyre is at its highest during the first few hundred miles travelled By runnine new tyres for say 1000 miles on the front wheels, and then changing them to the back, wheels, enhanced mileage is ensured. One of the leading motor bus fleets in Australia has been long noted for the outstanding high average mileage obtained from the tyre equipment. One reason is the practice of always running new covers on front wheels for 2000 miles before putting them to the strenuous life of driving the vehicle.
