THE MAYOR'S FUND
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—With reference to workers on No. 5 scheme receiving the benefit of coal orders from the Mayor's Relief Committee. I would like the public to know that we are paying 3s 3d for Kaitangata and 2s 6d for lignite, whereas men on sustenanqe pay -is for Kaitangata and Is 3d for lignite. While I appreciate the privilege of receiving the coal I think we should get it a little cheaper. Yet another thing is that Mr Silverstone and the Unemployed Workers' Movement are claiming that they obtained the coal for No. 5 scheme. Some say the Unemployed Workers Movement did not. Well, of whom did the deputation consist? Perhaps your readers could kindly enlighten us. —I am. etc.. No Bluff.
[Some months ago owing to lack of funds, the distribution of coal and other benefits was discontinued for workers on the No. 5 scheme. A few days ago a deputation was received from an unemployed workers' organisation asking that the benefits of the depot should be restored to No. 5 scheme workers. While the committee was sympathetic, it was considered that the funds would not permit more than the distribution of coal to No. 5 scheme workers at a little below Cost price. The sustenance workers are on a special rate because they receive less by way of relief than the No. 5 scheme workers.—Ed. O.D.T.]
