TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel At Invercargill The first race at the Invercargill Trotting Club's meeting will start at 12.45 pirn. ' A Trial Run A trial run of the working of the new totalisator at Addington was booked to take place yesterday afternoon. A Strong Hand King's Warrior, Bonny Azure, and Sandusky are expected to make a strong hand for F. J. Smith at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting Hard Going Coherto could not act on the hard going at Oamaru, and broke up in both his races. The going is never soft at Addington, unless made so by rain. The Trotting Cup De Soto and King's Warrior are the ruling favourites in the north for the Trotting Cup. Lucky Jack, Indianapolis, Cloudy Range, and Graham Direct are next in favour. The Thoroughbred Influence The Approved Handicap at the New South Wales Trotting Club's meeting on October 18 was won by the three-year-old Springfield Globe, by Globe Derby from' Ayr, the dam of Cloudy Range. Ayr, previously at Durbar Lodge, Ashburton, was sold to Mr E Tatlow of Tasmania. She was got by Logan Pointer from Precision, by St Swithin—Kildasa. by Kilcheran—ldasa by Seaton Delaval. A £lO Fine As the result of a complaint lodged by J T. Paul, driver of Mocast, against F. J. Smith, driver of Bonny Azure, after the running of the Remuera Handicap, the Judicial Committee found that Smith failed to keep his right course, and ho was fined £lO. Commercialism If one desired to express a really candid opinion about the poor patronage bestowed on straight-out trotters' races in New Zealand it could only be based on commercialism. The pacer pays or is supposed to pay a quicker return than the trotter It, however seems to be overlooked that more opposition exists amongst the multitude of pacers than against the comparatively straight-out trotters. For this reason those who embark on lightharness racing from a commercial point of view should consider the least exploited field in the game. Indianapolis Indianapolis had no chance of conceding 60 yards to De Soto at Oamaru, but his time was approximately 2min 39sec, a fine performance in the strong wind and with a cloud of dust to swallow If .his feet give no further trouble (says the Timaru Herald) the champion should be in good order for the Free-for-All. D. C. Watts drove Indianapolis at Oamaru. and J. Fraser steered Cloudy Range, an arrangement that may be continued at Addington. A New Idea The Western Australian Trotting Association is giving good money for its Christmas carnival and has arranged the programme in a novel manner. Twelve races of £l4O each (winner to receive £100) will be run. and the 12 winners will compete for the £IOOO final. The winner will receive £650 and a gold cup (£SO value), the second horse £2OO, and the third £IOO. In , addition, there is a race between the 1 12 second horses, and the amount set apart is £350.
