POLICE VETERANS BACK

Owing to the difficulty of obtaining suitable recruits, due to physical and other unfitness, the City of London Police Force has had to enlist veterans who had retired on pensions. Applications for appointment in 1936 numbered 890, and 182 who dropped out left 708. Of this number 571 were found unsuitable owing to age, physique, and so forth. Of 137 attending for medical examination only 78 were found to be physically and otherwise fit for appointment. The Commissioner, Sir Hugh Turnbull, made this statement in his annual report to the City of London Corporation.
