OUTBREAKS OF FIRE
NINETY-NINE CALLS TO BRIGADE WIDE VARIETY OF CAUSES (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Oct. 27. A remarkable variety of causes was responsible for fires attended by the city and suburban brigades during the period from September 14 to October 20, stated the report of Superintendent W. L. Wilson, which was presented to the meeting of the. Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board to-day. ■ ' - - : The brigades responded to 99 calls during the period. One fire was started through the rays of the, sun igniting fireworks in a shop 'window, while another was caused by .floor polish overboiling on a stove. A person smoking in bed; was responsible for a third outbreak, and a fourth began through; a cigarette being dropped on the; seat ®f a motor car. Yet another occurred when a hot rag which had been used for cleaning a stove was out in a cupboard. Three fires were- caused when engines backfired and another re-, suited from , the backfiring of a central heating system. . Hot ashes placed against a wooden wall resulted in an outbreak, as did hot embers placed on a concrete floor. There was a blaze when benzine vapour came in contact with a lighted candle and another when asphalt leaked from a boiler into a furnace. Children lit one fire and two others were caused through children playing with matches and a cigarette lighter respectively. Another outbreak occurred when a child threw a celluloid doll on the fire. Included among other causes were fat overboiling on a gas cooker, a short circuit in electricity wires, a hot iron left on a wooden bench, a gas ring left burning, and paper blowing up a chimney.
