COUNTRY NEWS

WANAKA Progressive League A committee meeting of the Wanaka Progressive League was held in the Pembroke Hall. A letter was received from No. 4 Licensing Authority, advising that the fares on the Dun-edin-Pembroke route would be reduced from October 25. Under the new scale of charges the single fare between Pembroke and Dunedin would be 295. and between Pembroke and Cromwell 6s. Town Planning A meeting took place on October 20 between the Lake County Council and the ratepayers of Pembroke. Mr L. Leo (chairman of the Lake County Council) said that the ratepayers must be prepared to shoulder any financial responsibility in respect of town planning, and would have to indicate their willingness to agree on this subject before any definite decision was made. Dr A. H. Elmslie then moved " That this meeting of ratepayers desires a modification of the town planning of Pembroke, and requests the Lake County Council to procure such a pjan." He referred to the cost of administration of the township without town planning. Mr J. M. Mac Kay, sen., seconded the motion. The motion was carried by a large majority. Mr Lee then informed the meeting of the intentions of: the County Council in the way of reading improvements and the building of bridges. The main works were bridges over Spoltis Creek. Branch Creek, the Cardrona at Ballaniyne's crossing and at Robertson's crossing, and two on the Aspiring road. Also included in the scheme was the reconstruction of the main street of Pembroke. School Sports A committee meeting of the Upper Clutha State Primary School Sports Association was held in Pembroke on Friday last. A large number of entries has been received for the sports, to be held on November 6. Wanaka Bowling Club \ A general meeting of the Wanaka Bowling Club was held in the Pembroke Hall. Mr W. A. Studholme was elected as an additional vicepresident. The sub-committee set up to go into the matter of the erection of a refreshment shelter made its report to the meeting.—lt was decided to hold the matter over in the meanlime.

District Doctor's Club

The committee of the Wanaka district Doctor's Club (inc.) met the Lake County Council in connection with the proposed residence for the club's medical officer. Mr L. Lee (chairman ot the Lake County Council) stated that the mortgage Corporation had granted a loan of £2500 for the purpose at 3 per cent, interest, and 2 per cent, sinking fund for a term of 30 years. This would mean an annual interest bill ot £127. Mr Lee suggested that 20 guarantors would be a desirable number.. After this meeting an ordinary, meeting of the club was held. It was decided to have the club's casual employees insured against accident. A sub-committee was set up to endeavour to collect outstanding subscriptions. Messrs R. J. Lee, W, Reid, and W. Anderson were appointed a sub-committee to endeavour to obtain 20 guarantors for the interest on the loan. A. and P. Association The fourth annual meeting of the Upper Clutha Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in the Luggate Hall. The election of officebearers resulted: —President, Mr S. Jenkins: vice-presidents, Messrs A. Allison and E. Stokes. It was decided that the eligible members who retired from the committee by ballot should be re-elected, and the following were elected to complete the committee:—Messrs J. Morrow, W. A. Scaifc, A. Begg, R. K. Smith, W. A. Sludholmc. and S. Kane. . Cricket The Hawea team travelled to Wanaka.on Saturday, and was defeated by the home team. The scores were: Wanaka 136, Hawea 102. The top scorers for Hawea were C. Rowley (51 not out), W. Urquhart (12), J. Williams (10). Top scorers for Wanaka were B. Collings (40) R. Collings (33), G. Wilkins (31), C. Collings (12). Bowling for Hawea, Abraham took five wickets for 54, Rowley four for 65, and Harvey one for 12. For Wanaka, B. Collings took eight wickets for 50, and H. Harris two for 4. CLYDE Miniature Rifle Shooting The concluding shoot of the Clyde Miniature Rifle Club took the form of a self-handicap combined with the ordinary handicap. R. Hanning won the self-handicap, and W. Thomson the handicap. At the conclusion a bountiful supper was provided, and the president (Mr E. W. George) presented the prizes wen during the year and congratulated the members on their success, both on their own range and in matches with other clubs. The prize-winners were as follows: Club champion: H. Tattersfield 1, C. J. Davidson 2, Handicap aggregate: J. R. Ross 1, R. Wilson 2. The prizes were given by Messrs E. W. George. W. Tattersfield, J. L. Davidson, W. Thomson, F. Lindsay and L. G. Naylor. Concert Party The Dunedin performers known as the Chang Lu Gaieties presented an entertainment at Clyde on Saturday night to a full house. Territorial Camp About 150 territorials assembled at Clyde on Saturday for instruction similar to last year, breaking camp on Monday evening. Card Evening The card evenings in the bowling pavilion are now proving very popular. Prizes given by Mr P. D. Edwards were won by Mr and Mrs Walmsley at last week's session. Dust Nuisance With the continued dry weather, every vehicle passing through the town—and during the week-end there has been a constant stream of trafficraises a cloud of dust, to the discomfort of business premises and private houses on the main street. It is reported in the town that the tarsealing operations of the Public Works Department are to commence at the town boundary, and' residents are very dissatisfied with this procedure. The main street is now a main highway, and the commencement of work a mile short of the boundary would not matter to anyone, and at the same time would be a blessing to the Clyde township. Cricket The annual friendly match of the Clyde and Lowburn Cricket Clubs was played at Clyde on Labour Day, Lowburn being the victorious team by 103 runs to 58.
