Gipsy Fair showed out from Lord Nuffield, Sailing Lady. Janet Gaynor. and Barley Almond. Gipsy Fair hung on to beat Lord Nuffield by a length and ahalf, Barley Almond being half a length away. Then came Janet Gaynor. Soliad and Sailing Lady. Linguist made light of her task in the Spring Handicap and won very easily The Surgeon and Trebleack were the early leaders from Ardchoille, Linguist, and Daring Deed, and the order changed little in the running all the way. When the straight was reached Linguist quickly cut down the leaders and went on to win easily by two lengths from The Surgeon, who beat Trebleack by a short head. Then came McHeath, Ashaway, and Ardchoille. Confidently handled, Debenture made no race of the Labour Day Trot over the final furlong. Aqua Bond, Charles Russell and Seascape made the running from Debenture, and Capricorn, who broke after half a mile. Down the back Aqua Bond led Seascape, Drumbunnif, Debenture, and Edith Grattan. Thermidor being naif a length away. Then came Stolen March and Gambler’s Luck. OAMARU TROTS CHIEF EVENT TO VILLAGE GUY GOOD PERFORMANCE BY DE SOTO The spring meeting of the Oamaru Trotting Club was held yesterday afternoon in fine weather, but with a brisk northerly wind in evidence. The grass track was in fine order, but dry underneath, and clouds of dust rose during the running of the events. Some excellent racing was witnessed, with several very close finishes. Village Guy won the President’s Handicap in good style. The race was, however, marred to some extent through Double Great coming back on Gallant Knight half way up the straight with a lap to go. Gallant Knight broke and put his foot through Gunfire’s sulky, and both horses fell Double Great ran a very disappointing race, as he was well placed when he dropped right out of the contest. De Soto won the Weston Handicap in impressive style, and his performance should bring him into favour for the Trotting Cup Handicapped at 24yds behind, he quickly ran into a good position, and Worthy Light could make no impression on him in the run up the straight. The scratch horse. Helen's Bay, outstayed the field in the Waitaki Handicap, and Harlequin, Repeal. Frisco Boy, and Toorak fought out a- great finish in the Dash Handicap. The totalisator handled £30,246 for the day (win £15,968, place £14,278), against £29,500 10s for the corresponding day last year. Results:— IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP. The Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting was concluded in cold weather, and a light rain fell during the afternoon. The rain improved the going by taking the sting out of the ground. Despite the rather uninviting weather there was a large attendance. Some smart gallops were recorded. and a breeze helped Amigo to win the Roseneath Handicap in 58sec. equalling the Australian and New Zealand record. The Harcourt Stakes showed Royal Chief in a very favourable light, as he won under difficulties in a fast-run race. Cuddle made an effort to win all the way, but Royal Chief beat her handsomely at the finish. The Crooner proved himself a useful three-year-old by finishing third, and incidentally beating Wild Chase and Kinnoull. Laughim Lass improved on previous form at the meeting by winning the Nai Nai Handicap, and followers of the favourite had a winning turn when Royal Minstrel won the final event on the card. Boughal went to the front in the Rona Hurdles, and flattened out every hurdle in the race. He had Trackman with him going along the back, and Patagonia and Spender joined them. Patagonia came on to win by a couple of lengths from Spender, and then came John Charles and Red Sun. who requires more distance. Suleiman’s impressive win on the first day made him a short-priced favourite for the Spring Novice Handicap. Lindrum and Relative were smartest out, and Suleiman soon joined the leaders. Rockingham and Screamer were badly left. Lindrum and Rela tive led into the straight, and then Suleiman joined them. Suleiman, without being ridden out. won by half a length from Relative, who beat Sigurd by three lengths. Mishna, Lindrum, Mowgli, Screamer, and Rockingham were next. The winner again scored with a good deal in hand. Rollicker was accorded solid support for the Tararua Handicap and he justified the confidence by being first out and winning all the way. Great Hope, Top Row, Sunny Blonde, Roaming and Alunga followed the leader round the top and into the straight, where Wagner put in a claim. A move on Rollicker saw him shoot away to win well by a length from Wagner* who beat Sunny Blonde by. the same distance. Top Row was a head away fourth and then came Roaming and Alunga. Rollicker did so well that further success seems sure to come his way. Protector, Telamon and Dunmanway’s withdrawal from the Roseneath Handicap reduced the field to five runners. The betting was practically confined to Surmount and Amigo. Windsor Chief hung fire at the start and Ortyx made the pace f’om Amigo with Surmount and Twenty Grand close up. Amigo joined Ortyx at the false rail, but the latter hung on well. Amigo, ridden out. won by over a length from Surmount, who beat Ortyx on the post by a head. Dictate started favourite In a good betting race in the Handicap. He was unlucky in getting squeezed out at the start Oratory got well away and led Small Boy to the far turn. Queen of Song on the rails was getting a bad passage and Nightdress was also getting boxed in the ruck at the tail of the field. Oratory led Small Boy round the top in a close field with Dictate handy as they turned for home. Once in the straight. Big Dock, who had been well back, arrived on the scene, A good finish home saw Big Dook wear down Oratory and win by a neck. Dictate was half a length away, two lengths in front of Small Boy, who was closely attended by Nightdress and Queen of Song. Royal Chief was made an odds-on chance for the Harcourt Stakes. He got all the worst of the start by having to begin on the extreme outside and was last away. Once in the back Cuddle took charge and led along the back with Royal Chief last. Cuddle led round the top, where Royal Chief was still last. Wild Chase followed Cuddle into the straight, with Catalogue next. Royal Chief was taken round the field and. racing up to Cuddle, beat her home by a good half length. The Crooner finished a good two lengths away third and then came Wild Chase and Kinnoull. Since 1929 L. J. Ellis has won the Harcourt Stakes six times, the last four in succession. Whirling was backed as a certainty for the Nai Nai Handicap, but the lightweights made it too hot for the topweights. Brunhilde, Laughing Lass and Lady Ina led to the straight with Whirling and Silver Streak last. Laughing Lass won in a good finish by a long head from Lady Ina, who was a head in front of Brunhilde. Silver Streak was close up fourth, with Whirling next. Min Lu, Royal Minstrel, Siegmund, Liane, Gironde and Tidewaiter were the earlv leaders in the Ruahine Handicap. Min Lu led Gironde into the straight, where Royal Minstrel. Tidewaiter and Siegmund closed up and Galteemore came from the back of the field. Royal Minstrel drew out to win by a length from Tidewaiter. who beat Siegmund by a narrow margin. Galteemore and Settlement, after being badly placed in the early stages, finished next to the placed lot.

RACING NEWS

By Sentinel Melbourne Cup Meeting The V.R.C. Melbourne Cup meeting will be opened next Saturday, when the Victoria Derby will be decided. The Cup is run on the following Tuesday. Pooley Bridge According to a Melbourne message. Pooley- Bridge, looking well after his spell, has returned to A. Foulshams stable at Mordialloc. Childstudy The former New Zealand horse Childstudy broke down after recording a fine gallop at the Perth course a fortnight back. He has been unsound for some time, and the breakdown is said to be serious. Meetings This Week Following the .Labour Day meetings, the only racing in the Dominion this week will be at Bulls and Banks Peninsula on Saturday. The New Zealand Cup meeting opens a week later. Hal! Mark Mr H. S. Thompson, at whose property Hall Mark is doing stud duty, is elated with the Quality of that horse’s progeny, says a Sydney report. The foals are said to be typical of the Heroic breed. Of Hall Mark’s first 13 foals, 11 are colts. Klltowyn Although defeated by Jonathan in the King George Handicap at Avondale on Monday, Kiltowyn gave further evidence that he is returning to form and his turn may not be Jar away. It has taken him time to reach racing condition after an extended spell, but he is a hardy customer who thrives on galloping, and success in a good handicap at one of the coming meetings should be well within his reach. A Field Day New Zealand-bred horses had a field day at Eandwick and Caulfield on Saturday, October 16. In Sydney they won four races with Homily, Courtcraft, Golden Treasure, and Mala, and in Melbourne Normal and International ways first past the post in their races. It was a very satisfactory day for Mr W. H. Gaisford, Courtcraft winning for him, and Homily, who is "under his direction for Mr G. M. Currie, also won in rare style. South Australian Derby Bought for 50 guineas as a yearling, with the intention of making him a i’umper. Golden Hill won the S.A.J.C. )erby on the Morphettville course a fortnight ago after an exciting finish with Earl Sion, who shared favouritism with him. The race itself was uninteresting in the early stages, and it was not until the straight Vias entered that the contest developed into an exciting struggle. The rider of Earl Sion restrained his mount as long as he possibly could, and when he did move to sprint home Golden Hill was in the position to go after him. These two had a great battle in the last 50 yards, but Golden Hill outstayed his opponent and won by a neck. Baratilla was a fair third, but the rest of the field were outclasssed. Mr W P A. Lapthorne, a committeeman of the S.A.J.C., originally purchased Golden Hill for the purpose of making a jumper out of him. His was the only bid for him. The colt is by Virgin. Gold from Skilly Hills, a Poodgnook mare. Brownfelt’s Brother Spear Chief, the Spearfelt—Sere Vale colt who topped the Brisbane yearling sales last year at 430 guineas, is- the outstanding three-year-old of the season in Queensland. A fortnight ago he won the Queensland Guineas Last season Brownfelt dominated 'he early three-year : old situation in Queensland, winning the Queensland Guineas narrowly, and this year his younger brother Spear Chief, is the three-year-old of the moment. Brownfelt went on to suffer narrow defeat in the Q.T.C. Derby, but if the ease of Spear Chiefs win in this year’s Guineas may be taken as a guide, this colt will take the mile-and-a-half classic o.i November 6. Spear Chief, whose victories also include the Q.T.C. Sires Produce Stakes, has not been raced very frequently. Last season he had nine starts for two wins, two seconds, and a third, and to date, since August 1, he has had five starts for one win and two seconds, his stake earnings being £1675. The Harcourt Stakes The Harcourt Stakes was inaugurated as the Champion Plate in 1909, the name being changed to the Harcourt Cup in 1928. and to the Har court Stakes two years ago (says “Rangatira”). Many illustrious performers have succeeded in this race, and in earlier years, and also again three years ago, it has been an accurate line to the New Zealand Derby a fortnight later. Twelv months ago Gallic was an easy winner, but he broke down on the eve of the Derby for which he appeared a near cer tainty, and the classic was won by Wild Chase, who did not contest the Harcourt Stakes. The first two winners—Elysian and Danube—both went on to Riccarton to score Li the Derby and other three-year-old winners who have also succeeded in the Derby were Desert Gold (1915), Gloaming (1918), and Sporting Blood (three years ago). The 1929 winner, Pink Coat must also

have been a hard horse to beat had he taken his place in Honour’s Derby field, but in his plucky performance at Trentham, in which ’ finished on three legs decisively to beat Seatown and Concentrate, he broke down completely, and was destined never to race again. Kinnoull, the winner two years ago, was pocketed in the Derby and was beaten into fourth, but he was generally conceded to have been a good thing beaten, as he demonstrated in a measure by easily downing the New Zealand Cup winner Cuddle and Heritage (third in th<- Derby) in the Canterbury Cup two days later. Other three-year-olds to win this weight-for-age event have been Byron (unplaced in the Derby), Merry Roe (who was not engaged in tl e Riccarton classics, but ran second in the Stead Gold Cup), Reputation (who ran second to Balboa in the Derby, Balboa having missed a place at Trentham), Croupier (who was not nominated for the Derby), and Red Manfred (who was beaten in the Derby by Nightly, a starter at Trentham, but not yet at his best on the day). TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel The Champion Indianapolis paced a fine race at Oamaru and looked in capital condition for his Cup engagements. De Soto f De Soto won brilliantly, at Oamaru, and is sure to come into favour for the New Zealand Cup. Put in Great Work Bing Crosby did not get a good run in the early part of his race at Oamaru yesterday, but he put in great work to get up into second place. He should develop into a brilliant pacer. Close Finishes The racing at Oamaru yesterday produced some of the finest finishes ever seen on the course. In one event the four placed horses went across the line with less than heads between them. Interdominion Championship The New Zealand Metropolitan Troting Club has decided to award £10,400 in prizes for the jnter-Domlnion championship events to be decided at a four days’ meeting to be held at Addington at Easter. It is proposed to run three heats over a mile and a-quarter on the first day; three heats over a mile and a-half on the second day, and three heats over two miles on the third day, and the final over a mile and five furlongs on the fourth day. The number of heats will be decided on the number of horses competing. It is intended to allot £2250 to the mile and a-quarter heats, and £2250 to the three divisions that will contest the mile and a-half races. This means that £750 will be allotted to each heat. For the two-mile contests £2600 has been allocated, and the final will be worth £2250. Lap prizes of £SO will be given for the horse in the lead at the second time to the winning post in each of the two-mile heats, and a cup of the value of £SO will be presented to the owner of the winner of the final. A prize of £250 and a special ribbon has been set aside for the most outstanding performer at the meeting. The committee has not determined the limits, and may not do so until after the New Zealand Trotting Cup is run. In the meantime, suggestions to make the limits 60 yards for the mile and a-quarter and for the mile and a-half events, and 72 yards for the two miles are being favourably considered. Any horse can be entered, and if it wins or runs second it will take its penalty from its assessed mark. For instance, a horse on a 4mln 40sec mark may compete, and if it is successful it will take its penalty from its original mark. The horses finishing first, second, and third in each heat will be eligible to compete in the final. A system of allotting nomls has been devised. It is proposed to award six points to winners of heats, two and a-half to horses finishing second, and one point to third. The horse doing the fastest time in each heat will be awarded two points and a-half. The winner of the final will receive seven points, second horse two points and a-half, and the third horse one point. The horse registering the fastest time in the final will be awarded three points. A Consolation Handicap of £SOO for horses that failed to get a place in the championship contests will also be included in the programme.
