REPORTS OF COMMITTEES The following reports of committees of the Dunedin City Council will be considered at the fortnightly meeting of the council on Tuesday •night:— TRAMWAYS COMMITTEE The tramways manager's statement of the traffic "eturns for the last fortnight shows an increase in revenue of £llOB, as compared with the corresponding period of last year. The position from April 1 to October 9 (27 weeks), as compared with the same period last year, shows a total increase of £13,065 equal to 14.80 per cent. GAS COMMITTEE The gas engineer's summary of the carbonising results obtained at the works during the month of September indicates an increase in gas •sent out of 478,000 cubic feet, equal to 1.8 per cent., as compared with the corresponding month of last year. Coke sold amounted to 400 tons and tar sold to 5073 gallons. RESERVES COMMITTEE The applications from cricket organisations and clubs for the granting of playing areas on the recreation reserves during the current summer season have been dealt with and a total of 59 wickets has been allotted:—Otago Cricket Association 15 wickets, Otago Boys' Cricket Association 17 wickets, Otago Cricket League 13 wickets, Otago Women's Cricket Association 9 wickets, sundry unaffiliated clubs 5 wickets. The charges for the various wickets will be as hitherto, namely: No. 1 ground, Logan Park, £2O; Tonga Park, £6O; other grounds, £6 5s per wicket. For the Otago Women's Cricket Association the charge is £1 6s 3d per wicket. Unaffiliated clubs pay £3 2s 6d per wicket. No charge is made to the Otago Boys' Cricket Association. The - Otago Cricket League pays, in addition, £7 10s for the use Of the pavilion on the Princes street side of the Oval and the Women's Cricket Association pays £2 10s for the use of a pavilion on the Anderson's Bay side of the Oval. GENERAL COMMITTEE * Consideration has been given to a proposal to provide additional cooling and freezing facilities at the city abattoir, Burnside. The extra accommodation is required to cater for additional business, which is available when the suggested facilities are provided. At present it is not possible to handle any new business as the existing freezing facilities are being used to capacity. The estimated cost of the proposed additions is as follows:—-Buildings and fixtures (including cork insulation), £4000; freezing plant and appliances, £ 1800;—total, £SBOO. In order that the premises be available for the new season's business in February next, the committee will recommend that the preliminary plans be approved to enable tenders to be called for the work at an early date, and that the manufacturers of the freezing plant required, which is an exact duplicate of the present plant now in use at the works, be asked to submit a quotation for such plant. There is no financial provision in the current year's allocations for this work, and the question of providing the necessary afinance has been referred to the Finance Committee for consideration, in terms of the council's standing orders. WORKS COMMITTEE The Works Committee will recommend that the application for permission to convert premises at No. 130 Cargill street into two self-contained flats in accordance with the plans submitted be granted, subject to the ceiling between floors being covered with five-eighths-inch fibrous plaster. The committee is of the opinion that this application is reasonable, and that the modification of the provisions of by-law No. 27 should be approved. INSTRUCTIONS TO ENGINEER The city engineer has been instructed to act in the following matters:— The erection of a garage at Ward street yard, at an estimated cost of £32. To record for consideration with the allocations for next financial year:— The paving of portion of Oxford street, between King Edward street and Kirkcaldy street, at an estimated cost of £2lO. The provision of K. and G. in portion of English avenue (north side) between Elgin road and Bowler avenue, at an estimated cost of £llO. The construction of walling to an average height of two feet along the foot of the banks at Mailer street extension to prevent clay from falling on the footways. Estimated cost, £2BO. WATER COMMITTEE Authority has been granted to call tenders for the purchase of a small car for the use of the assistant engineer. At present the engineer has part use of a light truck which is now required in connection with the additional work being carried out by the department. The purchase will be financed from the funds available from the sale of scrap iron.

Authority has been granted to extend the 4in main in Ainslee place, North-East Valley, a distance of 4 chains to serve additional premises being erected in the street, at an estimated cost of £BO. This amount is a charge on the extensions vote. FINANCE COMMITTEE The Finance Committee will submit the following recommendations:— Consideration has been given the request from the General Committee that an immediate grant be made available for protective walling required at the Morgue buildings, South road. The existing wall is in a dangerous state, and is causing damage to the building. As the matter is considered of an urgent nature, the committee recommends that the work be put in hand and that the cost (estimated at £350) be charged to the Special Works Fund The financial aspect of the proposal submitted by the council's General Committee to carry out further additions at the City Abattoir has received consideration by your committee. It is recommended that the cost be charged direct to the Abattoir account. This will have the effect of creating a debit in this account but the position will right itself in one or two years, the Abattoir account being meanwhile charged interest on the outstanding debit. That a grant of £25 be made to the Dunedin City Corporation Picnic Committee towards the expenses of the employees' annual picnic. A similar grant was made to the committee last year. This amount will be a charge against the "unauthorised " fund.

That Cr W. W. Batch elor be appointed the council's representative on the Dunedin Vocational Guidance Association for the ensuing year. Cr Batchelor at present represents the council on this body. The profit and loss accounts of the trading departments for the halfyear ended September 30 last have been received. The following is a comparison of the profits with those for the same period of last year:—

The total increase is £9634 6s 7d. ELECTRIC POWER AND LIGHTING COMMITTEE Instructions have been issued to the city electrical engineer to erect notices in the vicinity of the council's forestry plantations at Waipori, drawing attention to the need for protecting the same from fire and requesting visitors to refrain from smoking in or adjacent to the plantations. The co-operation of anglers and other visitors to the area is also being sought in this direction. The report of the consulting engineers on the progress of work in connection with the Waipori pressure tunnel for the period ended September 25 states that the contractors have 23 men employed, and work is proceeding on the surge tank and the completion of the tunnel. A further 24 cubic yards of concrete were nlaced during the period.
