SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS In addition to those previously acknowledged, we received the solution of No. 556 from R. F. Smaill (Dunrobin). Problem No. 557.—Q to K 6. Solution received from W. A. Mirams (Dunedin), J. J. Marlow (St. Kilda), A. Ellis (Dunedin), Dr G. Barnett (Dunedin), N. S. Traves (Timaru), " 185" (Central Otago). Problem No. 558.—1. Rtoßl,K to Q 4; 2. K to B 3, etc. If 1. . . P to Q 4; 2. R to K 2, etc. Solution received from W. A. Mirams, A. Ellis, Dr G. Barnett, N. S. Traves, H. E. Hewitt (Roslyn), " 185." PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITIONS We start our new two-move problem solving competition with Problem No. 559, and it will be continued with all the twomovers up to and including No. 607 Our competition for solving problems of more than two moves includes from Nos. 560 to 608. Problems that are " cooked" or have no solution will not count. After the solutions of Nos. 607 and 608 have been received and it is found that two or more competitors have tied for first place, either in one or both of the competitions, such competitors may be given additional problems until the winners are found. The prize for each competition will be 10s 6d, kindly donated by Mr A. Ellis, who besides being an outstanding and regular solver is a most generous patron. His kindness is much appreciated. The two-move competition will be limited to competitors who have never before received a prize in one of our solving competitions; but, of course, solutions from past winners will always be welcomed and acknowledged along with those of the competitors. The competition for the solving of problems of more than two moves will be open to all except, at his own request, the donator of the prize. No application for entrance is required, those competing merely sending in their solutions, with their names and addresses attached, to reach us not later than 9 a.m. on the Friday following the publications. Unless full solutions are specially asked for, key moves only are expected. When we acknowledge solutions we publish the competitors' names with their towns or districts, but if they request it we merely give initials or noms de plume. There is an advantage in competitors permitting their names to be published, for by so doing they become acquainted with one another and may form good friendships. GAMES The following game was played at Board 3 in the recent telegraphic match Victoria v. New South Wales:— " Two Knights Defence." White. Black. H. Kliss (N.S.W.). Max Green (V.). 1.
