SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Back From Northern Visit Messrs W. A. Blair and A. A. Campbell have returned from a visit to the north. They visited all the principal orchard and tomato fields in Nelson and also the tomato fields at Christchurch, where large quantities are raised under glass, and at Waimate. Mr Blair stated that the Nelson orchards were looking well, with promise of large crops, but a dry spell was being experienced, which would have a bad effect on the tomatoes if prolonged. The Waimate crops were looking very well. Borough Jubilee The people of the Kaitangata Borough are at present celebrating the jubilee of the borgugh, which was established in 1887. A ball was held last night, and to-day a fancy dress street parade will be held, followed by a gala in Victoria Park. To-night a banquet will take place. MILTON Bowling The Milton Ladies' Bowling Club officially opened its season on Thursday afternoon. There was a good attendance of local bowlers, and also visitors from the Stirling, Balclutha and Kaitangata Clubs. The green was officially declared open by the president, Miss Gray, and good wishes were extended by representatives of the sister clubs in South Otago. At the annual meeting of the club Miss Gray with elected president, with Mrs A. Byars and Mrs R. J. Cockerill vice-presidents. Mrs U. Walker was elected secretary, and Mesdames Wilson, Cockerill and Davidson selectors. Mrs McDonald (Green Island) was appointed the club's delegate on the Otago Ladies' Bowling Association. Lawn Tennis The executive of the South Otago Lawn Tennis Association has decided that the interclub competition will commence next Saturday. Four teams —Kaitangata, Milton and Balclutha (2) —have entered for the A Grade, seven teams in the B Grade—Stirling, Clydevale, Clinton, Balclutha, Waiwera, Kaitangata and South Otago High School. Six teams have entered for the C Grade—Milton (2), Lovell's Flat. St. Mary's, Tokoiti and Milburn. The opening matches are:—A Grade: Milton v. Kaitangata, at Milton; Balclutha I v. Balclutha 11. B Grade: Stirling v. Waiwera, at Stirling; Clydevale v. Kaitangata, at Kaitangata; Clinton v. South Otago High School, at Clinton; Balclutha, a bye. C Grade: Lovell's Flat v. St. Mary T s, at Lovell's Flat; Milton I v. Tokoiti, at Tokoiti; Milton II v. Milburn, at Milburn. Fire Board At the quarterly meeting of Milton Fire Board a letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs regarding the installation of a fare alarm system within the borough. It was decided to reply that the board was awaiting replies from the department's and underwriters' engineers on the proposed scheme outlined by Mr Gir-ling-Butcher, inspector of fire brigades. Accounts totalling £52 9s lid were passed for payment. One bank book showed a credit balance of £96. It was decided to call tenders for renovations and the painting of the Fire Brigade station, and the Dunedin members on the board were authorised to purchase a quantity of new hose. The superintendent (Mr W. H. Wells) reported that only one call, to a chimney fire, had been received during the past quarter, but the call was cancelled before the brigade left the fire station. The chairman congratulated the brigade on the excellent entertainment, presented at the recent complimentary social function for presentations of the U.F.B.A. 25 years'; service medal to Deputy-superintendent J. R. Wilson and surgeon's service badge to Dr J,. N. Edgar.

Toko High School At the monthly meeting of Toko High School Committee the resignation of Miss C. McQueen as a member of the teaching staff, owing to her approaching marriage, was accepted with regret, the committee expressing appreciation of her services. General discussion ensued on the question of presentation of prizes at the school break-up, and it was decided to ask the opinions of parents by circular letter. Messrs E. Moore and W. Brown were appointed as Visiting Committee during November. "Parents' Day," for visiting the school during teaching hours, was fixed for Tuesday, November 9. Dr Stevenson, medical health officer, visited the school during the current week, to' conduct the annual medical inspection of pupils in the lower standards in the primary department. Cricket The South Otago Association's shield and cup fixtures will be continued this afternoon. In the A Grade Milton will play Balclutha on the local ground and Kaitangata will play Owaka at Kaitangata. In the B Grade Milton will play Waiwera on the latter's ground, Benhar v. South Otago High School at Balclutha; Owaka v. Balclutha, at Owaka; Lawrence a bye. A team from the Mosgiel Club will visit Milton on Labour Day to play the annual friendly match against the local club. Magistrate's Court There was an exceptionally light list of cases for the monthly sitting of the Milton Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., was on the bench. W. E. Rogers, who was charged with riding a bicycle without a light on the main highway at Waihola on September 18, < was fined 5s with court costs (12s). Judgment for the plaintiff by default was entered in the civil claim, Otago Electric Power Board v. G. Ireland, a claim for £1 13s, with court costs (10s) and solicitor's fee (ss).
