ANGLICAN ORPHANAGES

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Anglican orphanages was held at Vauxhall yesterday morning, Bishop Fitchett presiding. Moving the adoption of the annual report, the bishop referred to the satisfactory manner in which the affairs of the orphanages had been conducted, and said that no worry was felt in that direction. They appreciated the work of the master and matron (Mr and Mrs J. S. Gerrard) and were grateful for the generous donations received during the year. Dr E. H. Williams, chairman of committees, said that there had been two events during the year which should be mentioned. One was the opening of the pavilion built in memory of Mrs J. M. Ritchie, the addition of which served its purpose admirably. Next was the visit of the Governor-General, who had expressed his appreciation of the work carried out. With regard to the working of the homes, the speaker said that he did not think there were many institutions which were run with less controversy and trouble than this one. He then paid a tribute to the work of the master and matron, which he said was exceptionally efficient. It was extraordinarily gratifying that the maintenance payments were coming in with so little difficulty, and there had been a steady flow of bequests which helped toward the easy management of the homes. It was 20 years since the Anglican Boys' Home had been organised, said Mr Dunkley, and few people realised what a wonderful home it was, in such beautiful surroundings away from the bustle of the town. He expressed appreciation of the work of Dr Williams as chairman of committee and honorary physician, and of Mr and Mrs Gerrard. Mr Gerrard thanked the speakers for the expressions of appreciation, and referred to the generous man*ner in which the homes were supported by the public. The annual report was then adopted. Mr W D. Jenkin referred to the question of entertainment in the homes, and suggested that football and cricket teams might visit them and give the children greater interests. The suggestion was supported by Mr Gerrard.
