ACTIVE AND STRONG

LONDON STOCK MARKETS MANY SUBSTANTIAL GAINS LONDON, Oct. 21. The markets were active and strong following the overnight recovery of Wall Street and the nonintervention news. Engineering, shipping, oil, and rubber shares were especially favoured. There were many substantial gains. The change in sentiment is remarkable. Though buying is mainly professional, it is felt that the public will not be long in following the lead, provided Wall Street manages to hold the recovery. NEW YORK MARKET ACTIVE NEW YORK, Oct. 21. (Received Oct. 22, at 5.5 p.m.) Although trading was slower the stock market was most active, 3,640,000 shares changing hands. Many closed one to four points higher. Prices receded after a brisk opening but recovered in the final hour.
