CHINA’S APPEAL
NEW ZEALAND RESPONSE ORGANISING WORK IN WELLINGTON (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 17. A public meeting of citizens and members of interested organisations called by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) to-day discussed ways and means of raising money to assist refugees suffering through the present conflict in China. The meeting decided to go ahead with the raising of funds, to work in with the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John, which have already launched an appeal, and to leave the distribution of the money to the Red Cross Society. A special Chinese Appeal Committee has been set up by the council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society, with Sir James Elliot as chairman. The committee aims to raise £IO,OOO in a month with the cooperation of other organisations. Mrs T. H. Lowry, president of the Red Cross Society, has made a donation of a number of special stamps, to be sold to motorists. In order to defray the initial expenses, Mrs Lowry has given £2O, and Sir James Elliott £lO to the fund.
