CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL

WOMEN’S COUNCIL MEETING ) . LAUNCHING OF APPEAL Details of the organisation of its appeal for public support toward the erection of a memorial building were discussed by a meeting of the Otago Women’s Centennial Council last evening. The meeting was held in the City Council Chamber, and Dr Siedeberg M’Kinnon presided over an attendance of 25 members. It had been represented strongly to the executive that in view of the fact that there had been so many appeals already this year, it would be advisable to postpone the launching of the appeal until early in the new year, Dr M’Kinnon said. She explained the inquiries that had already been made by the executive. The programme in its broad outlines had been approved by the council, and on Dr M’Kmnon’s suggestion it was decided to leave the date of the launching of the appeal and other details to the executive. , , , - _ The questionnaire that had been sent out had attracted detailed and helpful replies, it was reported. They showed that the proposed plans would meet the needs oi all except the sports bodies, which were anxious to have space available either on the roof or in the basement for winter sports. It was emphasised that the site must be central, and that a public rest room should be available. A letter had been received from the town clerk, in his capacity as honorary secretary of the Otago Centennial Council, asking if rough plans and the estimated cost of the proposed memorial could be submitted. Dr M'Kinnon explained the tentative plans that had been obtained, and it was decided to make the desired information available. It was made clear that no further progress with plans could be made until a site was obtained. Dr M’Kinnon reported that several sites had been inspected, and there was a number of properties available. Nothing definite, however, could be done until the proposal was officially approved and the scheme was further advanced.
