A cult which taught the worship of Tats, bugs, snails, and other lowly creatures has come to an abrupt end with the arrest at Tokio of the three “ founders.” They were Aisei Akatsu, his wife, and an associate, who in the past three, years were stated to have netted considerable sums of money from the new “ religion.” At the time of the arrest, it is alleged, they bad 60 followers paying them monthly “ dues.” Akatsu converted his home into a place of worship in 1934, “combining'’ Shinto and Buddhism to form his cult. Pieces of paper, on which were written the names of various creatures, were “consecrated” on the altar to represent the deities. These occult practices came to the knowledge of the police when a complaint was filed by a middle-aged spinster. She insisted that a talisman she had obtained from the “ patron ” was spurious, since it had failed to drive out “ the spirits of 550 whales that were preventing her from finding a husband.”
