“ What is the use of my doing this? What is the use of Latin, grammar, mathematics, chemistry, or whatever the particular pet aversion may be? ” said Mr A. G. Pite, headmaster of Cheltenham School, in a recent speech. “At a meeting at v/hich 1 was present the other day, the chairman said: ‘ What is the use of all this time you spend in school? Is it any good? ’ Well, if education is thought of simply as something we can convert as 'rapidly as possible into the maximum of cash, then I hope U is extremely useless. Where you nave to measure justice, mercy, beauty, oi love, you find there is no system of measurement yet devised which can work it out in £ s. d. or any other material form and give you the correct answer. What the world needs to-day is not a larger capacity than one’s neighbour to amass wealth, but a greater capacity to increase happiness; and education cannot be measured by any gold standard.”
