ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

BRIGADE NOTES The following warrants and notifications have been received from St. John’s Gate, London: — Dunedin Corps—District Officer W. D. Pirreit, S.B.St.J., has been specially appointed acting gas officer, and he will arrange for the appointment and services of a qualified air raid precautions (anti-gas) staff, in consultation with medical and other appropriate authorities. In this connection, lectures on air raid precautions have been given along general lines, and unit commanders will, within the course of a week, receive further instructions regarding a series of lectures to be commenced this month. \

Corp. Officer L. B. Stewart has been appointed corp. officer for the Cadets. Dunedin Ambulance.—Private H. Chisholm has been appointee’ div. secretary, and L.C. Corp. A. Grant corporal Milton Ambulance.—R. Hay has been made an ambulance officer, and Dr J. N. Edgar divisional surgeon. Other appointments are: Private H. Pagg to be corporal and Private W. H. Wells to be div. secretary. The following appointments in other divisions have also been reported:— Hillside Division.—J. H. Guthrie to be sergeant. Hillside Cadet Division.—Cadet W H. Swanson to be cadet sergeant, Cadet J. Ellis to be cadet corp., E. H. Dowland to be corporal. Kaikorai Division.—Private A. H Marshall to be hon. sergeant and div. secretary. „ Balclutha Ambulance Division.—Dr D Frengley to be div. surgeon, Private ‘Fowler to be div. secretary, Milton Nursing Section.—Dr J. N. Edgar to be div. surgeon. Dunedin Nursing Division.—Mrs H J. Sell to be div. treasurer. Leave of Absence. —Corp. Supt. G. Syder has been granted leave of absence from duty for one month as from October 1. Corp. Officer A. Thompson has also been granted leave of absence from his duties for one month. Dist. Officer H. 0.. Marsh has been granted a further six months leave of absence from his duties. In the interim, District Officer P. C. Wilkinson will act as corporal superintendent, and Corporal Officer L. J. Swanson, a member of the Hillside Cadet Ambulance Division. Proficiency Certificates.—Presenting proficiency certificates to members of the Hillside Cadet Ambulance Division at the Kensington Drill Hall on Saturday morning, the Chief Commissioner of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, Colonel G. Barclay, 0.8. E., K.stJ.V.D.. complimented the lads on their industry. The training and study necessary to enable them to qualify for the certificates would prove of immense benefit to them. Already certain members had qualified for the Grand Prior’s badge, and it was expected that a notification of these awards would shortly be received from St. John’s Gate. He trusted that before the end of the year a number of other members would qualify for the award. Dunedin Ambulance Division. —The Dunedin Ambulance Division reports that steady progress is being maintained and that teams have settled down to serious training for their anticipated visit to Christchurch to compete in the South Island championships. , Hillside Division.—The Hillside Division reports an interesting lecture delivered by Dr Monnheimer. his subject being “Insensibility.” Superintendent J. Penson thanked the doctor for his lecture, stating that the members present appreciated thfe valuable information which he had imparted to thefn. The annual inspection of the division was carried out last month, the inspecting officers being Colonel Barclay. Lieutenant-colonel P. H. Morey’. Dr R. Fulton, and District Officer G. Swanson. Following the inspection, six teams competed in the efficiency competition, which was judged by the following;—Diagnosis for the hobby shield, Dr R. Fulton: first aid, Colonel Morey; triangular bandages. District Officer Swanson and Transport Superintendent D. S. Mac Lean: roller bandaging. Lady District Officer Mrs Fox. The winners of the Hillside Efficiency Cup and the hobby shield were Messrs M’Kewan, Coward, Smaill, and Boss, and of the Fox Cup Messrs A. M’Kewan and A. Dickson. The medal for the junior roller bandaging was won by E. Little. The division also reports that it is endeavouring to send three teams to the South Island competitions, which are to be held in Christchurch during the Labour Day week-end. 'Prior to the closing of the evening, the superintendent mentioned that at the next practice the division would carry out training in artificial respiration and resuscitation. _. . . ~ Oamaru Nursing Division.— Reports from the Oamaru Nursing Division state that the annual inspection .was held on September 20. the division being inspected and re-examined by Dr Fitzgerald, The division has made great progress, and it has now secured its new uniforms. The Oamaru Optimistic Club promoted an evening from which half the proceeds were given to the Oamaru new ambulance fund. The division wishes to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation to the club for this assistance.
