YACHT ASSOCIATION

ADJOURNED ANNUAL MEETING CHALLENGES FOR THREE CONTESTS The adjourned annual meeting of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association was held last night. There were present:— Messrs J. D. Cameron (Ravensbourne) in the chair, F. Percy, W. H. Riddell (North-East Harbour), W. Hewitt, W. H. Sell (Otago Power Boat Club), L. R. Ward, C. Smith (Port Chalmers), F. C. Henderson, A Cameron (Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club), A. Robb (Burkes-St. Leonards Regatta Committee), G. King (Ravensbourne), F. T. Partel (Vauxhall), and the secretary. Mr F. C. Brown (Vauxhall). „ Election, of Officers The election of additional officebearers of the association resulted as follows;—President, Mr J. D. Cameron; vice-presidents, Messrs W. H. Sell and C Smith: secretary and treasurer Mr A. Robb; auditor, Mr B. H. Nees- delegate to New Zealand Council, Mr Cameron: Emergency Committee— Messrs Sell, F Percy, and F. C. Henderson. National Contests On the motion of Mr Riddell, seconded bv Mr Partel, it was decided that the association challenge for the Sanders. Cornwell, and Masport Cups Cup Trials It was decided that the HarbourBoard should be approached to lay out the courses for the Sanders and Cornwell Cup trials, the former to be a windward and leeward course to make nine miles in two laps, and the latter to be a triangular course, making nine miles in four laps. Messrs Riddell, King, and Ward were appointed a Sailing Committee for the Cornwell Cud trials, and Mr Robb was appointed for both classes. Masport Cup Mr Hewitt said his club thought that the association should know all that had passed between the Otago Power Boat Club and the Picton Power Boat Association in regard to holding the Masport Cup contest at Dunedin. As the association had decided to challenge for the cup, he would hand over a letter received from the Picton Association. The letter from the. Picton Association stated that it had cost a great deal to take the cup to Picton and it stood to gain nothing by going to Dunedin. If the Power Boat Club allowed Picton £lO for expenses as Otago was allowed for the last contest, the holder would be £3O out of pocket and could not count on the prize money as a source of revenue. There was also Mr Perano’s expenses to be considered. It was thought that some better inducement should be offered. Mr Sell stated that the Power Boat Club was prepared to guarantee half the cost of the contest at Dunedin. He mentioned that it would cost his club about £l2O to take Miss Otago to the starting line. He was of the opinion that an inducement should be given to a Wanganui boat, too. Mr Percy moved that the association sponsor and approve of the Power Boat Club’s correspondence with Picton and that it write to the t northern association asking it to submit a statement of the minimum cost of its participating in the contest. Mr Henderson seconded the motion. Mr Hewitt said his club had a limit to its resources and could only pay half the cost if the amount was reasonable. To let the association carry on from the present stage as Mr Percy suggested, would be giving Picton a free hand to ask for any expenses it liked. He moved as an amendment that the matter be left in the hands of the Power Boat Club and that it bring a definite estimate of the cost of holding the contest in Otago Harbour in 1938 before the next meeting of the association. The amendment was seconded by Mr Smith and carried, only Messrs Percy and Henderson voting against it. General A long discussion took place on the queen carnival to be held under the auspices of the Dunedin Hundred Thousand Club, and, on the motion of Mr Riddell, it was decided that the association would take part in the effort to raise funds for sports bodies and grounds improvement. The date of the official opening day of the season was left in the hands of the Syllabus Committee, and it was decided that the president and secretary act on this committee ex officio. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring secretary (Mr Brown) and the auditor (Mr Nees).
