COSTLY TELEPHONE CALL
MAN WHO USED INDECENT LANGUAGE SPOKE TO STRANGE GIRL (Per Unxxed Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 11. A telephone call from a railway station slot machine on Saturday evening cost Francis Bernard O’Kane, aged 22, the sum of £lO. He used'indecent language to a young woman at the other end of the telephone, and asked her to meet him outside the Epsom Post Office. She agreed, but when she kept the appointment she was accompanied by two detectives. O’Kane admitted having used the language, which he attributed to having had drink, and pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day. “ Did he know the young woman? " asked the magistrate, Mr Wyvern WilS °Detective Sergeant M'Hugh: No, sir. He just picked out the number from the telephone book. This is quite a common occurrence with some people, ringing up and using filthy language. Such offences are very difficult to detect. O’Kane expressed regret to the court, but when he asked for time to pay the fine, the magistrate replied; ’‘You'D get your liberty when you pay £10.”
