AN OUTSTANDING CROP OF SWEDES

' The crop of swede turnips shown in the above illustration was grown on Messrs Gregg and Co.’s Chicory Farm at Stirling, and when weighed by officers of the Fields Division, Department of Agriculture, was estimated to yield 'ls tons 15cwt per acre. This, crop received the highest aggregate marks In the Turnip Growing Competition conducted by the Otago Fields Competition Society, and was awarded the Otago V ; Championship for 1936. Thorough cultivation is at all times practised on Messrs Gregg and Co.’s property. The manager (Mr J. IM’Klijlay) believes that a good seed bed is absolutely essential for success. A point of some Importance is that one top of carbonate of lime per acre is always applied some time before sowing. This practice is i growing one in South Otago* and well worthy of general adoption. Eighteen ounces of turnip seed were sown, together with Sicwt anti-club root (reverted phosphate base) turnip mixture per acre, the great - bulk of which was sown through the front box of the turnip ridger. An excellent strike was obtained, and the crop continued its growth well into the winter months. It was very even, with no brown heart and only just a trace of club root in evidence.
