THE OXFORD GROUP MOVEMENT
TO the editor Sir,—l would like to inform your correspondent “ Poor Parson ” that every statement written by “AntiBunkum” is perfectly true, and let me tell “Poor Parson,” or any other parson for that matter, that the only hope of Christianity is in the rehabilitating of the Pauline theology. It is back, back to an incarnate Christ and the atoning blood, or it is on, on, to atheism and despair. After reading the testimony of the Rev. Harold T. Commons, passed on by the Rev. P. B. Fraser, and other criticisms given by others in the press, there can be only one decision arrived at regarding the Oxford Group Movement, “Weighed in the balance and found wanting.”—l am, etc., J- D. Brown. Mosgiel, October 9. TO THE EDITOR Sir—Since the four cardinal points of the Oxford Group, viz.—truth, love, unselfishness and honesty—are very commendable ideals, there can be no doubt that the group was formed with the definite purpose of raising the standard of the people as a whole. May I ask, however, why man’s main issue, namely, his eternal abode, has been shelved by the group. Does not the Book of Books say. ‘“What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world” (and at the same time attain to the high standard set by the movement) “and yet lose his soul?” Does it not appear, therefore, that the group is as a watch without a mainspringbeautiful casing, but, alas, the vital centre missing—so that its use is negligible. There can be no question that the group has been incorrectly formed. Its centre should have been Christ, the Saviour of sinners. By believing in Jesus, the one Mediator between God and man, men would be saved. Then, and then only, would man, being safe in the arms of Jesus, grow in the virtues set up by the group.—l am, etc., Isardez la foi.
