Mr A. F. Griffen has returned from a visit to Invercargill. Dr D. G. M'Millan M.P., was a passenger for Wellington by the express train yesterday morning. Mr W. W. Batchelor left for Wellington by the morning express yesterday. Mr A. J. Rice travelled to Christchurch by the express yesterday morning.
Our London correspondent, writing on September 18, says that Mr H. Turner, London manager of the New Zealand Fruit Board, is a passenger on the Rangitiki. Mr J. I. Goldsmith, of Wellington, chairman of the Soldiers’ Civil Reestablishment League, is visiting Dunedin.
At last night’s meeting of the City Council Mr Thomas Scurr was appointed an inspector under the Government’s housing survery scheme. Mr J. H. Chapman, accountant to the Otago Hospital Board, has been appointed secretary of the Ashburton Hospital Board out of 55 applicants. Mr J. Seaton, Peninsula County clerk, returned to Dunedin yesterday after attending the annual meeting of the Otago and Southland branch of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks held at Invercargill on ' Saturday. Reference to the death of Mr J. Nelson, a representative of the Green Island Bowling Club, was made by the chairman (Mr T. Smith) at last night’s meeting of the Dunedin Bowling Centre, and a motion of sympathy was carried in silence.
The Union Airways liner Kotuku left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim and Palmerston North, with Miss Betty Murely for Christchurch. The Korimako arrived from the north at 1 p.m. with Mrs E. Y. Comrie and infant from Palmerston North, Messrs E. Bellam and E. Turksma and Mr and Mrs N. R. Lightbody from Wellington. Mrs M. O’Brien from Blenheim, and Mrs S. M'Pherson from Christchurch.
Mr James Lobb. of Lawrence, will be home in time for Christmas. He will leave by the Empress of Britain on October 2 (says our London correspondent. writing on September 181, and will travel to Vancouver via Montreal, Ottawa. Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In San Francisco he will meet his friend Dr Nat Coulson. Mr Lobb enjoys his frequent visits to the Old Country, particularly to his native county. Cornwall, where he has many friends. He is in excellent health, and he has done much travel in a leisurely manner.
Mr Ken Alexander, of Wellington, has been appointed manager of Messrs Gordon and Gotch (N.Z.) Advertising. Ltd. He is a business man whose literary and artistic ability has made him well known to many readers of New Zealand and Australian publications. His versatility lias been shown in a wide range of cartoons and in humorous philosophic musings, illustrated by himself. Some of his drawings have been reproduced in English. American and South African papers. His book of topical humour, “ Highlights of Lite." published five years ago, won praise from intelligent critics in New Zealand and overseas. In serious vein, too, Mr Alexander has some notr.ble art work to his credit, particularly his illustrations of the work of the late Dick Harris, a very gifted New Zealander For some years his activities have brought him in touch with the field of advertising, particularly the production side.
