FESTIVAL CONTINUED The fifth annual Taieri Competitions festival was continued last night under the chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr A. F. Quelch) in the Coronation Hall. The programme consisted of national dancing, recitations, playettes. and adult piano solos. The results announced last night were:— NATIONAL DANCING Highland fling, local competitors only (11 years and under). Five entries — Miss Irene Stoddart 1. Miss Rae Garland 2. Miss Adeline Shea 3. Highland reel (under 15 years). Ten entries —Miss Rae Garland 1, Miss Ellen M'Lachlan 2 Miss Mercer Donaldson 3, Irish Jig (under 16 years). Thirteen entries—Miss Rae Garland 1, Miss Lorna Taylor 2. Miss Phyllis Baxter 3. Sailor’s hornpipe (under 15 years). Eight entries—Miss Lorna Taylor 1, Miss Ethel Chirnside 2. Miss Rae Garland 3. ELOCUTION Recitation (14 and 18 years). Three entries —Miss Molly Crossan 1. Miss Ivy Williams 2. Recitation, humorous (16 and over) The following were recalled —Miss M. Swallow and Miss Myrtle Smellic. Character Sketch (under 16 years) Two entries—Miss June Tregjlgus 1. Miss Nessie Holland 2. Playette. limit of six players (under 12 years) One entry—Miss Randle’s Juveniles 1. Action Duet, in character (under 16 years). Seven entries—The following were recalled: Misses Pauline Howell and Hilda Callender and Misses Renee Lepine and Thelma Clark. Master David Owens and Miss Thelma Owens were highly commended. MUSIC Piano Solo (18 years and over). Two entries—Miss Joyce Ford 1, Miss Anna Thomson 2, SPECIAL PRIZES Miss Lungley’s special prize for local boy competitor with highest marks in song under 11 years—Master Billy M’Cunn. Miss Lungley’s special prize for local boy competitor gaining highest marks in song, 11 years and under 16 years—Master lan Hutton. To-night’s programme, over which the Rev. N. Challenger will preside, will consist of tap and operatic dancing, action songs, adult vocal solos, recalls, and brass instrument solos.
