ROWDYISM AT MUSSEL BAY

DUNEDIN POLICE CONSULTED MAYOR WANTS “SERVICE” That the relationship between certain members of the Port Chalmers Borough Council and the Port Chalmers Police Force was somewhat strained was made apparent at last night’s council meeting, when a communication was received from the superintendent of police at Dunedin dealing with investigations which had been made arising out of a complaint about some oil being placed on a seat in a bus shelter, and also concerning rowdyism at Mussel Bay in the early hours of a Sunday morning, the superintendent suggested that if there were further complaints of a similar nature, it would be as well for the council to inform the local police of the happenings.

Cr Smith, referring to the rowdyism, said that it was nrobably only a joke on the part of some people who had attended a “ kitchen ” evening oil the Saturday night. The Mayor: This was no “ kitchen ” evening party; it was a crowd from Dunedin who were responsible for the noise in the early hours of the morning. Cr Smith: There has been no other complaint, and I am sure there had been no over-indulgence in liquor. Cr Watson; We know things are not “so sweet ” between the local body and the police, but I think the local police should be asked to deal with minor offences, It is not healing the breach by going to the detectives.

The Mayor: If necessary I will go to Wellington to obtain a simple service. Cr Watson; It .is the wish of the council to inform the local police of minor, breaches of the law. The Mayor: I would do so if I could get service. There is no breach with the council, but we asked for service and it was not given. Cr Watson: I suggest you refer any future complaints of this nature to the local police. The Mayor: Although I respect your suggestions, I feel I must go where I can obtain service. Cr Smith: There has been a little trouble with the local police, but they should be notified of breaches of the law. , . Cr Armstrong: By referring the matter to the Dunedin police we have achieved our object in attracting the attention of the local police. The discussion then lapsed.
