“DESPICABLE ACTION”
AGED WIDOW TRICKED “ I have yet to learn of a more mean or despicable action on the part of a relative,” declared Superintendent Wright at Salisbury, England, recently, in reference to Leonard Bertram Kerley, aged 28. He had pleaded guilty to stealing by means of a trick £ 154 from his grandmother, Mrs Kate Porter, a 70-year-old widow with whom he had been living at Winterbourne Earls for about six years. Wien Mrs Porter’s husband died his bank account was transferred to her name, her intention being to draw £1 a week for her requirements. Mrs Porter used to sign cheques, and Kerley cashed them. All went well, stated Superintendent Wright, until September last, when Kerley induced his; grandmother to sign blank cheques, and hand them to him. He cunningly allowed her £1 a week. Eventually, the whole of the amount standing to Mrs Porter’s credit was exhausted.
