STARTING PRICE BETTING
QUEENSLAND LEGISLATION BENEFIT TO THE CLUBS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. Legislation passed by the Queensland Government seven months ago, providing severe penalties for betting outside racecourses, has revolutionised racing in Queensland, according to Mr P. J. O’Shea, a prominent solicitor in Brisbane and chairman of the Queensland Turf Club, who is a through passenger by the Mariposa to the United States. He said that legislation had largely rid Queensland of startingprice betting and helped the clubs to pay more substantial stakes. This system did not interfere with the paddock, but cut the foundation from under the feet of the Leger and flat enclosures. Previously his club's average attendance on the flat was 750. whereas immediately after the enactment of the new legislation they had an attendance of 5000 people in two days. The attendance in the Leger had also increased 40 per cent. The increased attendances were reflected in the totalisator, which at the 1936 meeting put through £42,000, as compared with £64,000 this year.
