WELFARE OF THE MAORIS
CONCERN OF THE GOVERNMENT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter i WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. The determination of the Government to develop schemes for the welfare of the Maori people was stressed by the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) in an interview this evening. A complex problem was presented, he said, but it was being tackled in a thorough and sympathetic manner. "I saw some of the Native development schemes myself before my departure for England," the Prime Minister said, "and I was greatly impressed by the work which was being carried out. There is not only the economic side to be considered, but also the psychological effect of giving the Maori an interest in winning production from his own lands. Those schemes will be developed as systematically and as efficiently as possible."
