TORPEDO ATTACKS

ON A BRITISH TANKER SUBMARINES IN /EGEAN SEA HAND OF ITALY SUSPECTED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) CONSTANZA, Aug. 20. After a series of torpedo attacks in the Mgean Sea the crew of the British tanker Miriam, laden with petrol for the Spanish Government, refused to leave harbour. Kemal Ataturk and his Ministers abandoned the army manoeuvres in Eastern Thrace and hastened hither. They consider that mysterious submarines are shelling vessels in Turkish waters. Meanwhile Signor Begonia, Spanish Charge d'Affaires, warns Valen-cia-bound vessels from South Russia not to venture outside the Dardanelles. It is believed here that the iEgean submarine activities are being conducted under the aegis of Italy, which if not actually furnishing the submarines, has provided one of the Dodecanese Islands as a base. ORPERS TO FRENCH WARSHIPS PARIS, Aug. 22. (Received Aug. 22, at 11 p.m.) The Government has instructed warships to fire on any vessel that attacks French merchantmen.
