OBITUARY

THE EARL OF PERTH LONDON, Aug. 21. (Received Aug. 22, at 5.5 p.m.) The death has occurred of the Earl of Perth after an operation. His successor is Sir Eric Drummond, Ambassador in Rome. MR R. A. SOLOMON The death occurred at Palmerston yesterday of Richard Albert Solomon, who died in the early hours of the morning as the result of a sudden heart attack. Mr Solomon, who was 34 years of age and was a son of the late Mr Saul Solomon, K.C., was the Palmerston agent for Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd. About 4.30 a.m. he was attacked by a violent fit of coughing. He got out of bed, and immediately collapsed, dying within a few minutes. Dr P. F. Howden was summoned, and announced that life was extinct. Mr Solomon went about his business as usual on Saturday morning, but retired to bed at 7.30 p.m., complaining of tiredness. Dr Howden diagnosed the case as that of a sudden heart attack, and no inquest will be necessary. Mr Solomon leaves a wife and two children. MRS ELLEN BROPHY The death took place recently of Mrs Ellen Brophy, one of the pioneers of South Canterbury, at the age of 81 years. Mrs Brophy, who was a native of Tralee, Ireland, came out to New Zealand in 1869 in the sailing ship Glenmark, landing at Timaru from one of the surf boats. Shortly after her arrival she married Mr Martin Brophy, who pre-de-ceased her two years ago. Mr and Mrs Brophy first took up land at Pleasant Valley, but later occupied farms at Orari, St. Andrews, Sutherand Milford, and about 18 years ago they removed to Temuka, where Mr Brophy worked until his retirement six years ago. Mrs Brophy is survived by two sons and seven daughters—Messrs M. Broohy (Nelson). T. Brophy (Te Kuiti), Misses M.. F., and N. Brophy (Temuka), E. Brophy (Christchurch), B. Bronhv (Greymouth), Mesdames J. Stack (St. Andrews) and H. Shea .(Makikihi). ,
