THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AfiO

There was talk in town yesterday of gold having been discovered "somewhere near Timaru"; but nobody seemed to know tipoh what authority the story was based, and the only attempt we heard made to define the locality was that it was "on this side of the range." Information has been received in town that the Governor has accepted the services of the Glyde Company of Rifle Volunteers. . It is again intended to issue "Dunedin Punch"; and wo hear that the first number of the new series will be published on the Ist September. By the courtesy of the Captain of the Rachel, from Valparaiso,; haye k ' dates to the 3rd June. "La- Patria del' Vapor" says:—"Though twenty three days have elapsed since the departure of the Spanish squadron from the Peruvian coast, we are still without reliable information as to their course and final destination. This uncertainty gives rise to various conjectures, and seriously occupies public attention; so long as the whereabouts of the enemy remains unknown; the war Will continue .'Suspended, and it Will be impossible, tp decide what plan to adopt in regard to the approaching operations of the allied squadron . now. assembling and completing its organisation in the archipelago of Chiloe. •-; Some are of opinion that ; the-. Spanish squadron, in pursuance of 'the; plan of operations, previously ;-,traced but/:'oat .Madrid, has shaped its course "for Montevideo, there to abide the issue of the. negotiations at Washington by the cabinet, of Madrid, 6r await the reinforcements which are to. be' sent from Spain for the resumption of hostilities against -the. Republics- of the Pacific.- But others there aW who think differently. It is their opinion that the Spanish squadron has been so crippled as to be in no condition to undertake the long and stormy passage through the straits of Magellan or round Cape Horn.. The injuries, to some of the vessels have been repaired very hastily and very imperfectly. Further, the Spaniards arc reluctant to quit an area which they entered so proudly and with such extravagant pretensions. They' will, for a brief season, withdraw to San Francisco. Panama, or to some port in the Eastern seas, either of their own or of some friendly power, and will then be better Drepared than ever for a second trial of the fortune of war on the Pacific coast." A Western soldier, who had been through all the campaigns, and shared in many of the fiercest battles of the war, writes from his home, "that he never realised the horror of war till he got home to Indiana, and found his , girl married to a stay-at-home drygoods clerk.
