HARBOUR VANDALISM

DAMAGE TO BOARD'S PROPERTY MOLE BARRACKS ENTERED Further damage to Harbour Board property was reported at the meeting of the board last night, when the engineer (Mr J. M'G. Wilkie) advised that vandalism had occurred at the barracks at the mole works. Doors in various rooms had been forced, and there always seemed'to be vandals about at the week-ends. With respect to the board's representations about interference with harbour lights, the inspector of police wrote stating that exhaustive inquiries had been made, but no trace had been found of the persons who had interfered with the lights. It was suggested that it was the work of irresponsible youths, as adult persons, realising the serious results that might follow, would not be likely to do such a thing. Yachtsmen and others using the harbour had offered to inform the police if they saw any signs of vandals at work.

The chairman (Mf W. Begg): I think they should receive very short shrift. It was decided to ask the Aramoana Progress League to assist in preventing similar -acts to those which had occurred at the mole, and if possible to name the culprits.
