SALARIES RAISED

MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT PRIME MINISTER’S VIEWS LONDON, June 22. Only a few voices were raised in opposition to the motion moved in the House of Commons by the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) that the salaries of members of the House be increased to £6OO a year. The motion was carried by 325 votes to 17.

Mr Chamberlain said he was surprised and distressed to find that many members were living beyond their means, were obliged to curtail their children’s education, and actually allowed themselves insufficient food.

“ We do not want to fix a salary which will induce people to enter the House of Commons for the purpose of earning more than they could outside,” Mr Chamberlain said. “On the other hand, we do not want the salary so low that men and women capable of valuable service are prevented from entering the House. The extra cost will be £112,000 yearly.”
